More Bad News for Caribbean Coral Reefs

Many already knew that corals are having troubles, especially with the warming of waters. The IUCN just released a report about the issue getting worse, approaching critical, in the Caribbean.

Umm, the article sounds really bogus as in they catch headlines with this about 'global warming'

The Caribbean’s coral reefs have collapsed, mostly due to overfishing and climate change, according to a new report released by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Then they say something totally different about what caused this.
Is this something you also see when reading this story or myth or whatever it is?

Much of the decline is caused by a massive die-off of sea urchins in the 1970s—possibly due to disease. Without these reef grazers—the “cows in the field” that keep vegetation in check—the number of algae and grasses have skyrocketed, dominating reefs and pushing corals aside, Lundin said.

Or are they so bold as to say 'climate change ' killed the urchins in the 1970's. No, they say it was disease that killed them.

They also say:

“For those that are very skeptical of what’s happening with climate change, I would say reality is not in their favor.”

I'm unclear. Are you denying both climate change AND the problems with coral reefs in the Caribbean?

The linking of the coral death to climate change is pretty suspect, the article is poorly written. The decline of corals is due to the sea urchin die off. Perhaps warmer waters also is bad, but not the cause. The writer is implying unless something radical is done about 'climate change' the corrals are doomed, when they are already dead, you see this too?

The author quotes from two different sources, is your issue with how the article was written or the statements from others contained within?

Either way they didn't break the news that the coral reefs are dying, just giving an update.

Are the locals still using chlorine in squirt bottles to capture creatures from the reefs?

I heard some things like that and when tested the chlorine does a really super job of killing large amounts of coral when it is directly assaulted at close range.

I am confident that over the ages of the earth, the coral survived and endured, through cold and warm epochs and times when the earth poisoned the waters itself. I suppose we feel sad about the passing of this corral, knowing that it will survive elsewhere, unless you think it is different this time, when it is not any different from what has happened in past epochs. Supposedly there have been extreme extinctions wiping out 90% or more of all sea life in past ages. I am certainly not going to give an inch to the government in new carbon taxes willingly, for them to just frivolously spend away and further increase our 16 trillion dollar debt.

What does carbon taxes have to do with recognizing that global warming is happening? If the sole reason for your denial is because 'da gubbermint is in my life', you may want to reevaluate to separate the two issues.

Science is science, and not judgmental as to the conclusions of its work. Public policy is another matter, which one can argue.

But to argue one when discussing the other doesn't make sense.

It is tightly related, potential government policy and 'climate change'.
Much of this already has been set in motion in the public psyche. Government looks at climate change and instantly thinks we have a new great source of revenue taxation. I am very pessimistic about motives when truly enormous amounts of money are involved. We are talking trillions of dollars. Real or not their is a message in the media and it is a form of propaganda.

"Propaganda is a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position. Propaganda is usually repeated and dispersed over a wide variety of media in order to create the chosen result in audience attitudes."

So you are in denial of climate change because you think there may be government action? Or are you in denial period... denying the science? So far, your mixing the two.

Coral -- or any other life form -- could be challenged by more than one event.

Very sad, I think the aquarium collectors use arsenic, or something similar.
The clown fish used to be a constant source of pleasure and amusement, but after "finding nemo" they all seem too have disappeared ( apart from a few secret spots I won't reveal)
