Lagoon

CO2 is invisible and odourless. Of course, you cannot perceive it.

And I have seen the plastic in the Pacific gyre - three times.

Re: More Bad News for Caribbean Coral Reefs

Humour me a little, how is Atmospheric Co2 accurately measured from Co2 trapped in ice some 3000 years ago?

I believe , but by all means correct me if i'm wrong, the ratio of Co2 / O2 at ground level has never ever changed.

Global warming, mmmmmm New York is excluded.(send coats please)

Climate change yes, pollution yes, overpopulated yes but not caused by one, singular, non perceivable (give me a break) gas.

Historical Carbon Dioxide Record from the Vostok Ice Core

CO2 is heavier than "air"

Quote:
At standard temperature and pressure, the density of carbon dioxide is around 1.98 kg/m3, about 1.5 times that of air.
It does diffuse in the air as do all gases.

Check the ice ice core levels for changes, they have never exceeded 300 ppm in the past cycles. Current ground levels 390 ppm.

Weather and climate are not the same thing.

No, CO2 is a trigger for other green houses gases, including water vapour. Greenhouse gas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

CO2 is detectable, but not perceivable to human sense unless at very high concentrations.

You also cannot perceive CO, but you can detect it.

Re: More Bad News for Caribbean Coral Reefs

So the ratio of Co2 that we breathe, has it changed?

Yes, it is now 390 ppm; higher than any time in the existence of homo sapiens.

I don't know why it's easier for some to trust a bunch of late-night table-pounding tv and radio demagogues over a supermajority of the world's climate scientists... but many do.
I believe its so they can justify their own anger.

I returned to Qld (Australia) at xmas and was so impressed to see families walking the beach , kid's and dogs in tow picking up all things made of plastic or rubber.

That's being pro-active, that's doing something about where we sail!
Its not being proactive, however it is showing that some people believe we have a problem and they are trying to help. Unfortunately its to little to late.

In the case above being proactive would have kept the garbage off the beach in the first place.

Re: More Bad News for Caribbean Coral Reefs

Lagoon

This biggest issue with plastic in the ocean is not what you can see; it is what you cannot see.

Quote:
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch has one of the highest levels known of plastic particulate suspended in the upper water column. As a result, it is one of several oceanic regions where researchers have studied the effects and impact of plastic photodegradation in the neustonic layer of water. Unlike organic debris, which biodegrades, the photodegraded plastic disintegrates into ever smaller pieces while remaining a polymer. This process continues down to the molecular level.

As the plastic flotsam photodegrades into smaller and smaller pieces, it concentrates in the upper water column. As it disintegrates, the plastic ultimately becomes small enough to be ingested by aquatic organisms that reside near the ocean's surface. In this way, plastic may become concentrated in neuston, thereby entering the food chain.

Some plastics decompose within a year of entering the water, leaching potentially toxic chemicals such as bisphenol A, PCBs, and derivatives of polystyrene.
But since you cannot perceive it, it does not exist.

Re: More Bad News for Caribbean Coral Reefs

So combustion has suffered? Our fires don't burn so bright? We are short on breathe?

You know man seems to be so accurate in measuring the minute change in Co2 content of our atmosphere, At 390 ppm it's at it's highest now, yet in all things there can only be averages NOTHING is constant.

What is the average ppm of Co2 over the last 200 years?

LMAO i'm well aware of degradation of plastics, our country switched to re-usable shopping bags many years ago. Most shoppers in Australia take their 'green bags' with them.
