Re: Moorhead City to Tortola -- Bail in Bermuda?

Have you begun researching the weather patterns you wish to leave in?
I webnt from further south, Key West via NPC, so it was different for me, but you look for the end of a low comming off north of Cape Hatteras and then jump on it as the Northerly starts coming around to the SE, don't you?
So that may be a guiding factor... One doesnt want to cross the gulf stream in a N or NE....,well, maybe if its a NE thats very light...

Someone here will know the systems.

Re: Moorhead City to Tortola -- Bail in Bermuda?

Your routing will depend on the weather forecast. I've done the trip 5 times, and only got close to Bermuda the first time, when Herb was urging me to make my easting first. For 3 days it was 'go east', and on the 4th it was 'go west, there's a rapidly developing low approaching'. I ended gybing east as soon as I was even with the low, but had to slog into SE winds on my way south. All the other times, I dove SSE to below 30N with a front approaching, then rode the NE winds behind the front to get to the islands.

Yes, that seems to be the strategy. And, yes, absolutely not going across the Stream when the wind has any northerly component. That shouldn't be too difficult -- it's further along that is more of a concern. A winter gale is almost guaranteed in Nov. I think, just don't want to encounter any tropical storms.
