Yes, definitely do the trip. But don't think that'll be the last father-son trip! Ten years ago my parents flew up from Florida to visit. My dad and I did a two-week trip on the Chesapeake on my boat from Annapolis to Norfolk and back. Great trip. I was 40 and he was 65.

You don't need to cross the GS, when you go around Hatteras you are west of the stream. If you don't want to go around Hatteras you can take the ICW to Moorehead and then outside. Charleston is a fun trip and there are a few good stops along the way.

Knapp's depends on your draft, of course... but I've seen boatloads of good sized sailboats go back and forth through there. Can't always tell what they draw, but they certainly draw more than we do.

The only times I've seen somebody stuck in the approaches... they've been nowhere near the channel, which isn't real wide on each end, but still pretty well marked.

Could also make a northern loop instead: maybe Chestertown, Rock Hall, Georgetown, the Bohemia, Chesapeake City, Havre d'Grace, Bal'mer...

Yes - it's a nice little town for a short visit. We spent two days - one going walkabout and one lounging on the boat.

It's been a couple of years since we were there. We made it pretty far up Rock Creek carrying 6 ft (crossed the bar at high tide) before realizing we couldn't get into the anchorage. We ended up in Parker Marsh and a long dinghy ride to town. The town is on our list of places to return.

If you draw 4.5 ft or even 5 ft you should be able to make it to the basin off town.
