I think your saying the same thing in a different way! I have been in confused 30 foot seas and I didn't plan it, they came up on their own in a matter of hours. I was about 150 miles offshore so there were no options except to see it through. I'm not sure we would have survived if we not been experienced boat handlers.

Yea, what could possibly go wrong with an untested 56 year old boat?

Something can go wrong every time you head out. The prudent mariner never leaves the dock. But seriously, I'd say you're pretty much guaranteed something will go wrong. Probably several things & many lessons will be learned but if they stay in the ICW the chances of being lost at sea are remote. One things's for sure, this would be a trip to remember. I hope the OP keeps us posted.

Re: Maybe Wrong Forum . . . Questions re: ICW

What is the best way to get conditions along the ICW after something like hurricane Irma, or Jose ?

I learned that last year's Mathew closed parts of the ICW, and I think they are working to have the dismal swamp opened back up (dredging and tree removal) by end of this month.

The Best way to get up to date information is either from Active Captain or the Salty Southeast Cruisers' Net (Cruisers' Net | Cruisers Helping Cruisers). The SSCN is actively soliciting information from marinas right now and updating the data. Active Captain is best for an up-to-the-minute check when you are thinking of arriving somewhere "tonight."
