Re: Map, Abandoned Villages, Newfound & Labrador
Nice … who’s map is this? Where did the data come from? I like the colour-coding to break it down by decade.

Re: Map, Abandoned Villages, Newfound & Labrador
Very cool.
How the devil do I save that link?
Over the summer we met some folks about our age who grew up on Fair Island and Silver Fox Island. They were very bitter about their loss.
PS: found how to save it! Thanks again.

Re: Map, Abandoned Villages, Newfound & Labrador
The interactive map displays the 600 towns and villages which were founded and later deserted in our short 500 years of history. By clicking on each pin you can see for yourself the name of the town, the year it was settled, the year it was abandoned and the highest recorded population for that town. The pins are also colour-coded to represent the decade in which the settlements were abandoned – refer to the table below for more information.

Re: Map, Abandoned Villages, Newfound & Labrador
My Moms home town isn’t “abandoned” so not on the map. It’s peak population was about 250-275 IIRC. It’s now well under 100. and Little Bay Islands will be closer in the next couple of years, Great Harbor Deep was a few years ago.
Town connected by roads can survive, towns without road connection struggle.
There are also a few towns in Quebec’s Cote Nord that have no road connection. One ferry twice a week, ice permitting. Herrington Harbor is the largest, something under 300 folks.

Re: Map, Abandoned Villages, Newfound & Labrador
I know of one place that isn’t on the map, but should be. The community on Woods Island was apparently the largest place in Western Newfoundland at one time. Now it’s a few cabins — and a great anchorage!

Re: Map, Abandoned Villages, Newfound & Labrador
You guys are making me regret not making it to Newfoundland during our Down East Loop trip. It was totally impractical, but the idea of visiting some of those places just tugs at me. Maybe one day...

Re: Map, Abandoned Villages, Newfound & Labrador
I’m on an iPhone.
To copy the link I held my finger on URL bar that says google until I get a bar that says copy.
If you last the link into Facebook the image automatically comes up.
To copy the screen, make a screen shot, I hold the inn/off button and press the Home button and that takes a screen shot. My Wife’s iPhone 8 is different.
