Maine in the Spring

I am thinking of going to Maine from Halifax in the Spring, but normally people around here head that way in the fall on the way down the ICW.

Are there any real serious pitfalls to cruising Maine in May/June? Halifax is very foggy, that might be a concern to me.

Any thoughts?

There's less fog in May and June than July/August. Maine in May is way too cold for my taste, however June can be a great month for cruising.

WE plan to sail in Maine in May as well our boat is in Belfast we plan to sale it south starting first or second week of May. From what I understand there is less fog then but the weather is cold but if you have sailed in the maritimes in October or May I think you won't find it too bad. We sail in PEI beginning May 15th until Oct 15 so we figure we will be okay with the weather. Would love to hear what sailors from there think though.

Maine waters in May

I've been sailing out of Rockland, on Penobscot Bay, for 20 years and can tell you that May on the water tends of be very cool (read "cold"), sometimes wet (from the sky, that is), and blustery. Very few of the local pleasure boats go in before June 1st, and then it takes the whole month before most of them get launched. Of course, Halifax is probably the same (or worse), so you may know all about this.

For what it's worth, September is without doubt the nicest month to cruise the Maine coast.

It is the same in Halifax. September is far and away the best month for sailing. I can't wait to explore the New England Coast. So much history and culture to see, it will be awesome.

I've lived in Castine on the Penobscot Bay for the last 17 years. May will have some seriously cold days - not the type I'd want to be in my boat overnight. In addition, not all facilities are in full swing until June.

That said, there are some wonderful May days along the Maine coast.
