Looking for Used Dinghy and Motor in Virgin Islands

So we just bought a Leopard from the Moorings. They keep their dinghy's for the next boats. So I need to get one. We are starting our adventure the first week of December flying into BVI.

The Moorings guy was honest, he said the used dinghy's they do sell are in such bad shape they wouldn't let a charterer take them so he wouldn't recommend them.

I have tried looking around online for sources for Dinghys. Budget Marine has them and it is at least good to go over to St Marten, but brand new dinghy and motors are still expensive. I keep figuring there should be some used ones around somewhere.

But how do I find them? Any ideas?

It sounds like you are looking for a used dinghy in the BVI's, If I were you I would try to buy a junker there, good enough to make it home. Maybe one of the Moorings dinks would do that. Then row it. I am assuming you are bringing the boat home where ever that is, then do the research and buy a good one to have later, so you won't be making a snap desision. There is a good thread going right now on opinions of good dinghy's so if you don't know what you want it could be helpful.

Thanks. Yes I would go for that if I was coming back to the states. But our plan is to actually go out for a few years. So we will be in the Caribbean at least for the non-hurricane season then not sure (maybe south, maybe Rio Dulce, maybe up the east coast but not sure). So I would like to find something down there. Is there not a place people advertise things like this?

You should try Craigs list. It is available in the Caribbean, Go to CL worldwide then hit the Americas tab. Most of the islands will come up. At least a place to start. Other wise I would invest in a good new dinghy, they will cost you some money but it is a very important part of your life while living on a boat.

How hard is it to pick up a cheap inflatable and 2hp motor and bring them with you?

Other may be able to comment on possible problems, but a small inflatable/motor should be less than 40kg, and could be able to travel as excess baggage?

That said it could be worth calling this mob and having a chat.
