Looking for charter from NOLA to PLAYA DEL ASAP?!!!

Hi, I am looking to pay for charter from new Orleans to PLAYA DEL Yucatan. I would like to leave this weekend and it is a 1 way trip for my wife my Daughter and myself. I have limited boat knowledge but can handle anything directed for the 20 hr journey. Please let me know if you can fulfill this. Thanks Jay

Where did you get the idea this is a 20hr journey?
Last time I did that crossing it took 7 days 24/7.

And to find someone to up and scoot during the height of hurricane season will be next to impossible unless they're nuts.

It would be cheaper to charter an airplane. Not to mention I don't think there is any charter business in the area that would do this type of trip.

Thanks for the suggestion and input wasn't specifically thinking about sailboat time frame but I guess you're right on the 7 day deal with that and also it didn't have to be a business could just be an individual who was willing to do it for the pay.

Re: Looking for charter from NOLA to PLAYA DEL ASAP?!!!

... 640nm trip or so ...

Good news: 100ft superyacht Comanche could do it ('theoreticly') in 24h

Bad news: boat is in the UK racing to the time being
Bad news 2:even if the boat would be available the weather is not cooperating this weekend

Regards,

Carsten

If you are paying then it has to be a commercial operation. It would be a felony to just hire some dude on a boat.

Secondly it's seven or so days there then the same back, so you would be chartering the boat and captain for a week plus turn around time. Add in room for a weather window and you could easily be looking at a three week charter. If you are serious about this and are willing to put up $20,000 in absolute costs and an additional $10,000 deposit against possible costs I may be able to scrounge a boat up for you. But leaving in five days would be difficult.

Wife refuses to board a plane. I've tried every way possible to help diverter the fear but to no avail. So we agreed that a boat would be nice if everything falls into place.

Except....it may not be nice. The Gulf of Mexico can be a very ugly body of water....especially in hurricane season.

Why try the other kind of cruise? Carnival has sailings every few days that go to Cozumel.

There's a trip leaving NOLA Sat 22 Aug 4 pm arriving Cozumel 8 am on 24 August.

On the plus side if it's not extremely nice the wife may rethink the whole plane thing.

Oh I didn't state our dog Diamond. She's family and daughters best friend. Has to be included and carnival isn't pet friendly unless service animal.

20-30 Grand is slightly way out of what I had calculated a or willing to pay. I don't get how it would be a felony to offer someone money worthy of their time and effort for the transportation. I'm not planning on returning anyway and wouldn't want anyone to get in trouble.

IMHO a typical midsized sailing vessel is really not a viable option for you and your family. If you were looking for offshore sailing experience and adventure maybe, but you are just looking for transport.

Cruise lines are not either because under normal circumstances their guest may not disembark and remain in a country on their route (its a round trip journey).

However, there are some cargo ships which take passengers on a very limited basis. I know someone who came to Belize with their 5 dogs this way. I don't recall the name of the vessel they sailed on, but start checking with freight agents and shipping lines and something might turn up.

Because what you are suggesting is called commercial operation of a vessel, and in order to do it legally requires a licensed captain, and suitable insurance. Just like you can't pay a pilot to fly you somewhere

As for cost... Look up charter fees for a 40' sailboat in the Caribbean for three weeks. My estimate is likely high, but not out of the ball park. Realistically you are looking at 6-7 days there, 6-7 days back, and the deposit is in case of weather... Figure in the cost of crew (2 people for 21 days) and it isn't out of the ballpark. Just for the fun of it I went ahead and looked and to charter a 15 year old 42' boat with crew in the BVI with four passengers is running $8,500/week right now.

Add in wanting to leave immediately, and that there really aren't any charter companies in the are and I don't know what to tell you.

I also looked in Pensacola Florida, where they do have charters available. The only boat they have that would possibly work charters for $500/day plus $400/day for crew. But you would have to add provisioning costs. So figure $1,000/day or so. of course it is about a day and a half from Pensacola to New Orleans so the trip would take a little longer.
