Because what you are suggesting is called commercial
operation of a vessel, and in order to do it legally requires a licensed captain
, and suitable insurance
. Just like you can't pay a pilot to fly you somewhere
As for cost... Look up charter fees
for a 40' sailboat in the Caribbean
for three weeks. My estimate is likely high, but not out of the ball park. Realistically you are looking at 6-7 days there, 6-7 days back, and the deposit is in case of weather... Figure in the cost of crew (2 people for 21 days) and it isn't out of the ballpark. Just for the fun of it I went ahead and looked and to charter a 15 year old 42' boat with crew in the BVI with four passengers is running $8,500/week right now.
Add in wanting to leave immediately, and that there really aren't any charter companies in the are and I don't know what to tell you.
I also looked in Pensacola Florida
, where they do have charters available. The only boat they have that would possibly work charters for $500/day plus $400/day for crew. But you would have to add provisioning
costs. So figure $1,000/day or so. of course it is about a day and a half from Pensacola
to New Orleans
so the trip would take a little longer.
