Location of West Wall of Gulf Stream

To all: when I'm on the boat listening to VHF, I can always get NOAA weather radio information regarding the present location of the western wall of the gulf stream in my region. Is there any way to get this information online? thanks, pete

Thanks Rick: I have been able to find imagery without much problem. What I'm looking for is the distance information you get from NOAA weather radio. For instance, my local broadcast will tell me that the western wall of the gulf stream is 11 miles SE of Molasses Reef, 8 miles SE of Fowey Rocks, and 5 miles E of Jupiter Inlet, or something like that. I was hoping to find online information of the same sort. thanks, pete

If you check out weatherunderground.com, and enter the area you are interested in (say, Key West, or Miami) and then click on Marine forecast (5th blue link down under the radar thumbnail image) - you will get exactly what you are looking for.

For instance - I jsut typed in Key West, then hit Marine Forecast, and the beginning of the forecast synopsis reads:

Synopsis
An Atlantic ridge of high pressure over central Florida will move slowly southward through Thursday...before sliding near the Keys late this week into the weekend. The approximate shoreward edge of the Gulf Stream as of July 26, 2010... 15 nm S of Dry Tortugas light...on Loggerhead Key. 11 nm S of Cosgrove Shoal light...off the Marquesas Keys. 13 nm S of Sand Key light...off Key West. 19 nm S of Looe Key...off Big Pine Key. 19 nm S of Sombrero Key light...off Marathon. 8 nm se of Alligator Reef light...off Islamorada. 5 nm se of Molasses Reef light...off Key Largo. 2 nm E of Carysfort Reef light...off Ocean Reef. Gulf Stream information courtesy of the naval oceanographic office

Have at it.

Rob: you are correct, it worked beautifully...for Key West. Then I tried Jupiter, Cape Canaveral, and Cape Hatteras, and there was no mention of the Stream...

Sorry about that - I think only certain regions' reports contain that information, so it depends on which cities you use - for instance, try Stuart... Or Daytona... You'll get the info for the regions you mention (well, not Cape Hatteras of course...
