Local knowledge forked River N J to enter ICW

Local knowledge forked River N J to enter ICW
I’m a moderately experienced sail boater that needs to move a 25 ft sail boat from Forked River NJ south to the ICW. I see on a web map of the icw that the dotted line (icw route ) goes thru the Barneget Bay. Can I just get in the ICW there and head south.
Never been there so need some local knowledge on route and degree of difficulty.
Thanks, James

Basically, depends on your draft and vertical clearance how far you can get. 35’ fixed bridges past Great Egg Harbor, and you might find some 4’ spots. There’s also apparently a house that came off its moorings yesterday and sank in the NJICW in N. Wildwood.

Yes, just head out of the river and you are in the ICW near marks 38-40 I think. Watch your depth and you should be good.

As mentioned, the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway does indeed run down Barnegat Bay and past the entrance to Forked River. Technically, Mile Zero of the ICW is at Norfolk VA, so you should define more precisely what you mean by "the ICW."

Meanwhile, you can run down to Atlantic City from Forked River either offshore via Barnegat Inlet, or inside via Manahawkin Bay, Little Egg, Brigantine Waterway, etc. Both routes have challenges, but are navigable with care. You will have to go outside from AC to Cape May (38 NM).

On the inside (c. 40 NM) you can, with care, carry 7 feet (and in most cases a lot more) to Atlantic City. I recently made this route down and back to Annapolis with no issues (5 foot draft), but staying in the channel is a must.

Thanks for the input. I have only been in the North Gulf part of the ICW.
Have sailed some in the Bay near MD. So don't know much about that area. I
wound up not buying that boat but may sail my Catalina 22 up there from the
N. Gulf via Fla. if I can't make a deal on a bigger vessel.

Thanks James
