Lake Tashmoo Entrance

Has anyone charted the depth at the entrance to Lake Tashmoo on Martha's Vineyard this year. I have almost 7' draft and would like to get through at mid tide. Thanks.

My son in law keeps his boat moored in Tashmoo and he said I could make it in easily with my Pearson but I draw less than 6'. Since I was good I didn't take note of exactly how deep it was.

I'll check with him to see what he thinks about 7' and how the channel looks this year but it's been a busy spring for him and not sure he's launched yet. .

Just got an email from my S-i-L. He's going out this morning and will check the depths in the channel.

7' draft at mid tide was good last year. The channel is all soft sand, so no worries if you make a slow soft landing.

Reported June 2011: There appears to be more water on the north east side of the entrance.
Approach from that direction and turn into channel. Channel showed 6 -8 feet at high tide.

August 2012: Departing at dead low tide, the channel, including the entrance, showed no less than 6 feet.

Just spoke with my S-i-L. Left Tashmoo yesterday at low tide and the least he saw at least 6' all the way from his mooring.

He says typical tides there are 3' or better so at half tide you should have a few inches to spare and more coming in to float you off just in case.

Heading out to MV next week, and hoping to get in to Lake Tashmoo. We draw 6'9".Double checking to see if Mark made it in ok?

No problem as long as you watch the tide. We anchored just off the entrance after crossing from Woods Hole to wait for the tide. We went in 3 hours after low tide at Boston according to the tide book. Lowest reading I saw was 8' in a couple of places. Stay in the middle of the lake and you should be fine. I tested the depths well up into the end of the lake where it was deep enough for us. We anchored just off the town pier.

Just left and made careful note of depths. At mid tide I marked nothing less than 7'2" mid Chanel. Saw many boats that draw as much as 6' in harbor. Enter on rising tide it's all soft. Once in lake - plenty of water.

"Soft" is too hard a word for that bottom. I think you could travel halfway across the lake before you realized you went aground 100 meters back.

Yeah, and the mud clings to the anchor rode as if it was glue. Personally I see nothing of interest in Tashmoo coupled with a mile walk to town.

Got in and out with no worries! Very quiet, much better sleeping than Vineyard Haven (though we haven't tried going through the bridge there), and the mud wasn't too bad (mud in Newport harbor is stickier)....

Nice that you enjoyed Tashmoo! But I don't recall mud in Newport where we used to anchor off Ida Lewis Yacht Club. But today, that area might be restricted as available anchorages shrink in size and availability.

Anchoring in Lagoon Pond can be mixed. I have had good and bad experiences. There is quite a fetch for winds from teh SW and I had trouble in there with a Delta anchor. It does offer solitude along with a short dinghy ride to either the town dingy dock near the ferries or to Maciel Marine's dinghy docks. Maciel by the way is very accommodating offering free trash disposal and potable water. They also offer gas along with a marine supply store. Access is limited though to smaller boats from what I remember.
