Re: Keeping a boat in Nassau: Hurricanes?
Hatchet Bay has very poor holding ground. Not easy to fly to either.

AYS had a 3 year waiting list when we spoke to them a few weeks ago.

Re: Keeping a boat in Nassau: Hurricanes?
Best bet is to haul out in South Florida and leave it. Anything left in the water in the Bahamas in September and October is going to be a big roll of the dice. I personally would never leave my boat floating there during those months.

Got to be at least 10 feet.
I draw 5 and was never even close. It is outstanding to hide from a Norther, but a Hurricane? I don’t know that’s a whole nuther thing.

Re: Keeping a boat in Nassau: Hurricanes?
Hatchet Bay (Eleuthera) is NOT a hurricane hole.
For instance, every boat (± 300) in the bay was lost during Hurricane Andrew (1992), and then again during Hurricane Floyd (1999).

Keeping a boat in Nassau: Hurricanes?
I’m not trying to be sarcastic but the only hurricane holes I know of are 20’ above sea level and dug by a backhoe, then a boat is placed in them and tied down very well.
Being in the water, almost anywhere swinging at anchor, if you survive a hurricane, go buy a Lottery ticket, you are a very lucky person. Many do survive of course, but many don’t too.
Hurricanes scare me, if you have ever been even in a small one, you too will be afraid of them.

Where did you get your numbers? Having been in Georgetown with 300+- boats, I cant imagine how you would fit that many in Hatchet Bay. Are you sure it wasn't 30+-?

Yes, you’re correct - it was 20 -30 boats lost in Hatchet Bay.
When we got there, 6 months later (March '93), there was one wreck floating on a mooring, a couple at the dock, and several (4-6?) washed ashore. I don’t know where the others were.
I'M GUILTY.

Re: Keeping a boat in Nassau: Hurricanes?
There is always Luperon, DR as an option. The bay is completely enclosed and surrounded by mountains, in the middle of the north coast of Hispaniola. Probably about 60 boats here now waiting out hurricane season. Fly into Santiago, hour long taxi ride to your boat.
But...it's at the other end of the Bahamas. :P

Re: Keeping a boat in Nassau: Hurricanes?
Leaving your boat in the water in hurricane-prone area during hurricane season is a sucker bet every time.
I was in Hatchet Bay in 2009 and remember seeing several hulks on the shore around the bay that had been wrecked and left there by some prior hurricane. Hatchet Bay may be a "Tropical Storm Hole" at best, but it is certainly not a "Hurricane Hole." If you want your boat to survive a hurricane strike, make sure she's out of the water when the hurricane hits. Even then you might still lose her.
