Just daydreaming - Any civilised 1st landfall in New Jersey?

Just a vague idea for something that will probably never happen, but..........

As I am sure many of you know, New Jersey is named after somewhere else.........hence my nickname.

I was thinking it would be kinda cool to sail non stop from Jersey to New Jersey - stop for a few beers - and then sail back home. (Albeit I do appreciate that New Jersey was not actually "discovered" from here!)

I have done some Googling and New Jersey seems a big place and (without causing offence!) does seem to have a fair few towns that do not seem at first glance to be the most attractive of destinations. Especially as I won't be carrying any firearms. or buying any drugs. and will not want a crack ho'. probably

Any suggestions as to pleasant towns / cities in New Jersey that I could also clear through immigration into ? (I haven't Googled the immigration regs yet - but I will do so, as am not keen on a one way trip to cuba!)

See the following video link for a nice view of New Jersey as you come out of the Lincoln Tunnel from Manhattan. They seem to have edited out the Hatian ghetto, drug dealers, guns and crack ho's, but make no mistake... they are all right here.

The music makes it sound a lot cooler than it really is. If you like pollution and lung cancer and don't have time for a trip to China, this is the place to be!

May I suggest "New England" or possibly the British Virgin Islands instead if you are interested in places in North America that have some namesake from the UK?

Seriously... the further South you go, the better off you are in Jersey (what we call New Jersey). I will be glad to get out of here in about a month... never to return.

Actually I love the Sopranos , kinda reminds me of the in laws (the ones that have not (yet) suffered a work related terminal "illness" or on enforced "vacation") apart from not being quite so organised. or succesful.

Seriously... the further South you go, the better off you are in Jersey (what we call New Jersey). I will be glad to get out of here in about a month... never to return.

Have you just added this bit? - or was I just being blind / stupid? ........

.......have you got any names I can start Googling - something with a sheltered all weather harbour or a marina - doesn't have to be a place I want to spend a fortnights holiday in, just enough so I could shelter waiting for the weather and re-provision for the return leg. A few bars would be nice.

I moved from the Uk to NJ over 7 years ago and I can definitely say the US has some great towns - I just haven't found any in NJ.

However, Dave, if you end up in NJ - give me a call, you're welcome to pop by and take a land stop. Better do it soon before we b****r off ourselves.

Right by NJ, of course, is Manhattan which is something else altogether.

Cape May, NJ in or off season is a nice spot. South Jersey is maybe more attractive and a bit more tourist oriented. Northern Delaware can be nice too.

How about Atlantic City?? Nice inlet...great marinas...all the Casinos willing to exchange pounds for dollars!!!

When I was going to college for natural resource planning most of my profs would refer to New Jersey whenever they wanted to cite examples of the most f#@k'd up environmental messes in the U.S. At the time, I had only been to NJ once as a kid and all I could remember was that I'd continuously been asking my dad, "What's that smell?"

Then, I met a "Jersey Girl" in college and for the next seventeen years I visited the state about a half-dozen times a year. Most of those visits were at my in-law's "shore house" on Barnegat Bay. I, on the other hand was still asking, "What's that smell?"

Turns out she had grown up mistaking the stench of a state with more Superfund sites than anywhere else in the country as the "smell of the ocean."

She, like so many in the state, had adapted to the conditions and considered them normal - and sweet smelling. (I never did join her family in eating the crabs that they'd pull up through water that had fecal coliform counts 200 times the "safe" levels, though.)

I would agree on Highlands / Sandy Hook NJ...............spring & fall would be a great time.....................visited a few years back
Visit AHYC - A Popular Stop on the Eastern Seaboard
and you can see Manhattan in the distance.................ferries available to tour NYC in case you do not want to take your yacht to the city.

Clear immigration in New Jersey? Not on your life, the whole state is closed to foreigners.<VBG>

You can come close, clear into NYC which is a very nice landfall from at sea, even at night. You'll be clearing in at Fort Wadsworth, I think, on Staten Island just a half dozen miles away from the top of New Jersey.

A lot of the NJ inlets can be deceptive, with contrary winds and seas they can become outright dangerous with extensive offshore shoaling. Better to clear into "The Port of New York and New Jersey" as it is sometimes called.

Clearing In - Why? This is the USA. The easiest country in the world to just walk into and/or stay illegally .............no worries mon

A little more seriously, sure he's not the 1st sailor coming into NY/NJ area...........as with many voyages = preparation, timing, weather & planning will make the difference. Or as an alternative, a stop at another port (if necessary) to clear in will not ruin his overall goal of Jersey to Jersey. But AIS + radar would be very helpful & pay dividends here.

Great link, that's the sort of thing I was after..........Atlantic Highlands Municipal Harbor in Atlantic Highlands it is then . (if it seems to anyone that my destination is based solely on a link posted on the Internet by a complete stranger that just happened to contain a couple of nice photos.........then you would be right . But I have been places for far less reason, and with less knowledge about what was awaiting me at my destination )

Was chatting to a mate about this last Sunday, briefly discussed launching a Jersey to Jersey Race, but quickly realised this was impractical (and far too much like hard work - as well as involving spending money ).......the upside though would be that (IMO) it would be cool for my small company (very small .....it's basically just me at the moment ) to be able to claim to be the Sponsors of a Transatlantic Race..........so I am thinking of instead of a "race", making it a "challenge":-

1) Open to all boat and all crew sizes;
2) Folk can do it in company or alone;
3) Folk can leave on any date they want;
4) The only requirement is that the passage be non-stop. (Hey, it's Jersey to Jersey after all!);
5) The reward is a pint of beer..........and the satisfaction of completing the "Challenge" (and possibly their name "inscribed" on a website )

(Not sure whether to make it their and back............don't want anyone doing it just for the beer )

I figure "all" I have to do is think of a name for the "Challenge" and build a website and I could then legitimately claim my company to be the principal sponsors of a prestigous sounding event that actually exists.............the fact that few (if any!) actually make the trip would be irelevent.......


My mate's parting shot was "why aren't you down yer boat finishing off the forecabin??". I felt that was a low blow
