Is It Cruising ...

sailing from New Orleans to Newfoundland? Or is this just gunkholing over a longer distance?
Do you consider yourself a "cruiser" if you never leave the shores of this continent?

Hey if you cruise up the coast you are cruising...May start as a short cruise and end as a long one.

Re: is it cruising ...

Crossing an ocean is definitely cruising. Anything less is up to peoples interpretations. For the more snooty cruisers, the chances are that they will have a higher definition so as to exclude those who cruise less than they do.

If the boats moving and you are eating and sleeping on board, that's CRUISING, doesn't matter how far.
A trans Atlantic trip could be a job (delivery), not a cruise..

That would be my definition. I guess if you wanted to be picky sleeping on board should be more than just an occasional weekend.

From New Orleans to Jamaica would likely be considered cruising, which is not crossing any sea and is a shorter distance than NO to Newfoundland. I've spent as much as a week aboard travelling along the coast and into Florida but have never claimed to be a cruiser. But I want to be!

Part of the answer might be the prevalence, or lack there of, of others doing the same thing. In parts of Newfoundland you might as well be in the middle of the ocean for all the parts, etc. that are available.

Still, I recommend it.

Re: is it cruising ...

Definition of cruising is not having a destination.
If you have a destination it's a voyage.

Re: is it cruising ...

I think there's another element to it, and that's your state of mind.

Along with living on your boat and sailing from time to time, if your daily state of mind and activities are all about living the cruising life, ie boat projects, planning the next leg, provisioning, sightseeing, catching up with CF ... you're a cruiser, even if it's only for a couple of months, in that time, you're a cruiser.
Even if you're working for 6 months to refill the coffers, you're a cruiser.
But you lose the cruiser status when you go back to your fulltime job, or house on land status... until the next time
At least, that's the way I see it.

Isn't it attitudinal?
If you are relaxing and having fun, vis-a-vie a 'vacation', isn't that cruising?

Enjoy it

Re: is it cruising ...

I'm with DavidM, in my original thoughts... to paraphrase the former first lady:
"It takes an ocean to raise a cruiser"

and several stamps in the passport to prove your worth. But with my cruising plans still a few years off, the appeal of the Chesapeake to Maine then south for the winter also has it's pro's. That and the home-country familiarity.

So I had to ask. There's a lot of good sailing along the east coast.
Cruising is more than vacation! It's a planned lifestyle
