I miss the funny part.
But I agree, people dream for years and many spend their life savings on a boat to get away from it all and then wonder when they do why isn't it just like home.

Funny strange, not funny ha ha.

My take was that he went to a third world country and was shocked to find he was in a third world country. He should have stayed in Miami for that.

Sorry, after I hit send and re-read it, it did come off as a bit snooty, not my intentions, I knew you meant "In a strange way"

Make a respectful visit to a local church to see a different side of any of the islands.

My kids and I, sat in the Anglican Church on Christmas in George Town one year, listening to the Bahamians sing Christmas hymns for two hours. It was very moving.

I like the people of the Bahamas. I've worked there and played there. I grew up in rural Mississippi and almost feel like I am home when I am there. As far as a ratio of good to bad people, they have most countries beat by a mile.

Re: IS Bimini a Run down dump?

We are in Bimini. My girlfriend is amazed that everywhere we go, it is such a dump. There is no other way to put it. I love Bimini. But what we don't understand is why people just dump their garbage everywhere. Getting your beer bottle to a garbage can is not about social status, wealth, or lack of opportunities. This is beautiful place scarred by garbage dumped everywhere.

Re: IS Bimini a Run down dump?

Bimini is the perfect Rorschach test for sailors and would-be adventurers:
  • If after visiting Bimini your perception is that she is a jewel-in-the-rough, with kind and genuine people, amazing natural beauty, and wonderful experiences waiting to be discovered with only slight effort, then you are a TRAVELER.

  • On the other hand, if your perception is that Bimini is a dirty, over-hyped, garbage strewn, run down dump lacking in entertainment and over-populated with less-than-jolly locals, then you are a TOURIST.

Fortunately for tourists, the world abounds in Disney-style destinations. In the Bahamas, you need only go as far as Nassau to find Atlantis: Modern, antiseptic (if not sterile), alive with neon and video scintillation, and offering relative insulation from the pesky locals.

As for the travelers among us, we will have Biminis here and around the world to discover and enjoy – absent the turnstiles, crowds, and synthetic glitz. Enjoy them while you can–they won't be there forever!

Re: IS Bimini a Run down dump?

Haven't made it there yet..... but eventually it will happen. Still in the newbie stages learning and planning on a boat.
Anyway..... I'm confused about Bimini.... it seems that you either love it or it's a dirty place. Even sounds like the lovers of it think it's a dirty place.
It sounds like a place to anchor and swim and fish and relax on the boat for a few days. But maybe not go inland very far?
also.... poor does not keep you from being clean. Picking up trash is free.

Interesting take on the island Kim. I kinda wish they had rebuilt the bar Hemingway used to hang out at, but other than that thought it was OK. That part of the islands are all about reefs and small uninhabited rocks anyway. You only show up in town for conch and supplies.

BTW I only get seafood frozen from the fishermen- it avoids "inflationary tendencies." Next time I am there I probably should buy lionfish fillets LOL.

Re: IS Bimini a Run down dump?

OK enough Bimini Bashing. I love Bimini. Been going there since the 70's before I realized too much Rum wasn't good for you I over indulged and was left to recover at the bar long after closing, everything intact when I awoke except my head. Try that on S Beach. By the way I do volunteer work for the council on ageing delivering Meals on Wheels want to see rats and run down come with me on a run. Every environment has a + and a-.
That's all Folks
