internet in Virgin Islands

Planning to stay next winter in the Virgin Islands. I need good internet connections, lots of data. Where are good hot spots at moorings or marinas?
Thanks

Re: internet in Virgin Islands

Good luck and I look forward to reading other replies. I'm not aware any place or service in the VI that provides a consistently good internet connection at any price.

Re: internet in Virgin Islands

Ok I will chime in.

I use AT&T for my internet connectivity. Obviously you are not going to be watching hi def video over this service because of data limitations. However, the signal is strong and you can get it pretty much everywhere in the vi and in some of the island areas of the Bvi that face the vi. For the VI, AT&T is considered in country for the usa. Not so for Verizon, T-Mobile, or sprint afaik.

Most marinas and most hotels have wifi. It's not terribly fast but still .... It's good enough for me to work over. I work sometimes at the Marriott frenchmans reef. Also, I get good wifi service at the bar at the holiday inn downtown. There are a few coffee shops that have wifi especially around yacht haven grand.

Re: internet in Virgin Islands

In the USVI I recommend Broadband.VI we are at a marina.
The marina WiFi sucks.
We purchased service for $50 per month from Broadband.VI and it is great.
Unlimited data at 2Mb/s, Netflix is smooth.
They mounted a fixed antenna on the boat and it works great even when the power goes out. My network is hooked to an inverter from the house batteries so it stays up.

I do not think Broadband.VI offers service in the BVI though, just USVI.

Hope this helps.

Choice wireless is good for the USVI. They have a 3g modem you can get, and its around $70 a month. We used them for about a year.

We just switch our house over to Innovative, which is owned by Choice now.

For the BVI call Barry at AGLink. He does the wifi for all of my boats.

Re: internet in Virgin Islands

Save yourself a lot of aggrivation and buy an unlocked Dongle. Portable and rechargeable so you can use it even when you leave the boat. I use an unlocked Huawei 5200, bought from Amazon, and buy a chip for each island/country in the Eastern Caribban I want WiFi access. It beats driving around the anchorages trying to find the best wifi access, before anchoring. I have a programmable output wifi antenna, but even pushing lots of power usually just pisses off everyone else in the anchorage, and still yields spotty coverage, if you can find a free wif source.

Re: internet in Virgin Islands

Google Nexus phone on Google Fi service was always strong all over BVI last week. Never had any problems with data, same $/GB rate as home in the US. LTE speed in most areas. Make a hotspot and have fun!

Re: internet in Virgin Islands

Go check out https://fi.google.com I use a Google Nexus 6P phone on Googles plan. I think the plan is the best around. The phone is a dual sim card phone built in, it will auto switch from wifi, to att to t-mobile or something like that right in the middle of a call, whichever is the best strength.

The best thing is the data is truly pay for what you use. You can pick a level, i.e. I use a 4GB data plan. Any data I dont use I get a $$ credit off the next bill. If you go over its the same flat rate /gb.

I used it all last week in the BVI's and never had any connectivity issue. My guess for their and some 150 other countries it might be the best internet deal without hassle, provided your in range of a tower somewhere.
