Re: Increase in Caribbean Pirate Attacks

I thought is was a misleading title, attacks rise around Venezuela. Not hard to figure that out.

Re: Increase in Caribbean Pirate Attacks

Well they did note SV&G and St Lucia.
Coupled with this data on murders per capita, in which the Caribbean has become prominent, it makes one wonder what is going on.

Re: Increase in Caribbean Pirate Attacks

I don't think the homicide rates/ranking have changed much, South and Central American countries are, unfortunately for the people who live or visit there, perennially at the top, with the usual smattering of central African countries. It's a very sad situation that a REAL world governing body would find a way to do something about (in addition to genocide, ethnic cleansing, etc, etc). But let's not go there. My point is that "what is going on" is, I believe, is that it has been going on for so long that there is an acceptance of this as a 'way of life,' and thus it becomes self-perpetuating. Very disturbing, to say the least, and worse if you live there.

the hongrier/more deprived venezuelans are made to be, the more piracy is gonna be.
so make up your mind intelligently to sail or not to sail close to vene.
personal choice.

Re: Increase in Caribbean Pirate Attacks

There is some recent activity off Honduras. CSSN has two first-hand reports in April of yachts enroute from Providencia to Grand Cayman being chased. I did that route in March and thankfully saw nothing.

I know secondhand of a boat that arrived in Guanaja at the end of April and said they had been boarded and robbed 50 miles off of Nicaragua. No report for that one unfortunately.
