Re: I just dont get it??? Why??? WHY ST THOMAS??

Every island/country has its good sides and bad sides. How you look at them from your personal attitude makes a significant difference. For each cruiser that hates one particular island/place there are quite a few others who like it or love it. It is all in the attitude you bring to the place.
- - Having been in and visiting the USVI and St Thomas for over 50 years there have been some really bad years, but recently the experiences there have been quite wonderful. Things as changed, significantly in recent years, IMHO.
- - As mentioned by others, you are back "in" the USA and as a US citizen/resident that means the elimination of a whole raft of bothersome customs/immigration hassles. You have access to large and economical shopping in warehouse clubs/stores and even a Home Depot. And Puerto Rico is a day sail away for some serious Walmart's time. So access to supplies and shopping is really great. Especially if you know where to shop. Locals don't shop in the cruise ship tourist areas - they work there - but shop in places elsewhere on the island. When you learn how to do that the place is quite economical.
- - And then there is the opportunity to circle the island for some great anchorages and swimming/snorkeling/diving experiences. Add in the the other USVI's, St Croix and St John and you have a large area to cruise. Plus then there is the Spanish Virgins, etc.
- - So be it St Thomas, St Vincent, St Lucia, St Martin, Grenada or Trinidad you can have some seriously lousy and bad experiences or some really great times depending upon the personal attitude you bring with you.

Re: I just dont get it??? Why??? WHY ST THOMAS??

OK LMAO this thread turned into what it started out as, in my opinion, silly..
There were many places in St Thomas that I did not care for but many places I love and some great cruisers and some not so great, some good locals and some not so good, some good stores and some not so good, wow beginning to sound like every where else I've cruised to.
U are the one visiting be kind and they be kind too, remember u are who u are no matter where u are. Just my thought Hope this isn't considered bad form

I have a buddy there, and get over from time to time.... My $0.02 is that St Thomas is really two islands separated by MONEY. If you have the cash, it is a great place to live and visit.... If you don't; I'd stay away!

Re: I just dont get it??? Why??? WHY ST THOMAS??

I liked living in St. Thomas until my boat was broken into and robbed of valuables.

After that I did not like St. Thomas so much..

Re: I just dont get it??? Why??? WHY ST THOMAS??

Why St. Thomas! Why San Juan! Why St. Barts! Why Bermuda! Place any port after the Why. We are cruisers interested in exploring different locations. Friends have had their expensive electronics stolen in St. Augustine. It happens. So does sh t. There are beautiful people all over the world.. There are also beautiful vistas. A glass is either half full or half empty. It all depends on your view.

Re: I just dont get it??? Why??? WHY ST THOMAS??

You Florida cruisers really are spoiled for choice - a few days sail from home to and between so many countries and cultures (same for Med sailors). In Aus it can take weeks to sail between ports or to the closest island group, and that's just around the country, no ocean crossing. There are beautiful, unspoiled and very sparsely inhabited localities, to be sure, but these are usually preferentially inhabited by crocodiles and box jellyfish.

Re: I just dont get it??? Why??? WHY ST THOMAS??

I lived on St. Thomas. It is absolutely amazing and beautiful in *some* places (and has more amazing and beautiful places nearby). Most of those places are out of the way of usual cruise ship crowd, which is a good thing
I loved the Picara point, the Smith bay, Caret and Netljeberg and Dorothea and the view from the Northside.

That said, everyone likes different things.

In the socia lmedia craz it's called trolling. You create a thread/post that will create debate, and than you step back and watch the fur fly. Most of the time the OP will never post again.

Make that Latitude 18.
