Re: Hurricane Advice for Eleuthera, Bahamas

Staniel, Black Point, Rat or Glass Cay. Staniel to see the touristy things, Black Point to see a beautiful Bahamian community and Rat (you can dink over to Barreterre) or Glass to get some peace and quiet and good spear fishing or snorkelling.

Re: Hurricane Advice for Eleuthera, Bahamas

I seemed to create some confusion with my previous post. That graphic was NOT FOR FIONA. That graphic is the forecast for what is currently Invest 99L, which is located out in the Atlantic behind Fiona.

These forecasts are subject to much error at forecast lengths greater than 72 hrs out, so take with a grain of salt.

For more Invest 99L info, as well as SOLID info on all things topical systems, check out:

Re: Hurricane Advice for Eleuthera, Bahamas

the tropical wave (invest 99L) has only a 10% chance of development according to NOAA.

Re: Hurricane Advice for Eleuthera, Bahamas

Ya, I was just trying to post that. If it can make it to the Bahamas, development is likely, but by then it will not be much of a problem for the op.

Looks like development is more and more likely. The newest tracks take it right over the Bahamas chain as well.

Re: Hurricane Advice for Eleuthera, Bahamas

60% chance now of development into a storm with a track over Bahamas; Hurricane Hunter aircraft flying there now to investigate.
I have friends who left BVI yesterday running outside to St Augustine. If this wave can develop circulation they'll likely have north winds instead of perfect trade winds.

Re: Hurricane Advice for Eleuthera, Bahamas

I hope the OP found a place to hide. I wouldn't want to be in the Bahamas right now. Not sure why some people choose to stay there in the summer?

What about all the people that live there?

Could say the same thing about folks in the mid west during tornado season.

Re: Hurricane Advice for Eleuthera, Bahamas

Fire, squalls, storms, high heat, accidents, boats dragging onto you, robbers... these things can happen anywhere.

Summer in the Caribbean is hot, but also has nice days with uncrowded anchorages, uncrowded towns and bars, all with off-season prices. As usual you need to plan for contingencies. Including a hurricane hole.
:-)

Sorry, like the_alpine said, I mean't on a boat. I found myself hanging out in George Town in mid-June of 2013. Really tempted to stay through hurricane season, but chickened out. The risk (for me) is just too high. Currently, in a slip in Brunswick, Georgia.

Best wishes to all the cruisers in the Bahamas currently.

I don't think he plans on spending another hurricane season in the Caribbean. Probably why he's been in NY the last two seasons.
