Houston Sailors

We are thinking of moving to Houston Texas. Could anyone tell me what the sailing like there? I would like to know what the best sailing months are and if there are any nearby destinations for weekend cruising or 2 week trips.

Thanks

Hi Zippy,
We live in League City, just South of Houston near Galveston Bay. We sail 12 months a year here. The sailing is good, we generally have wind all year with it being calmer in the summer. The Marinas are relatively cheap and very nice. Galveston Bay has several good overnight anchorage spots. On a two week trip you could go South along the coast as far as South Padre. If you are more ambitious it's only 5-6 days sail across the Gulf to Isla Mujeras, Mexico. Or 7-8 days to Key West.
On the down side the water in Galveston bay is shallow and muddy, 10-11 ft. The shorelines are either muddy sand and shell or sharp oyster shells.
Come on down, there's plenty of room,

And, don't forget, Clear Lake.

zippy,
We like to think that we have two summers here. One in the fall and one in the spring. This is when the wind is the best and the weather the mildest. In the winter we get roughly two fronts per week bringing cold air and blustery "northers". The temperature rarely drops below freezing. Air Liquide and the petro chemical industy has brought a lot of your countrymen into the area. Welcome.
