Haul Out - Caribbean?

Greetings,

We are in the Dominican Republic, and we plan to sail to South America this fall. We are looking for haul out options. We would like a do it yourself yard for bottom work. Marine supplies will be needed, either to be shipped in or purcased nearby. Any recomendations?

Thanks,

Mark

Lots of yards in Cartegena. One yard rents apartments. You can get anything made out of 316 stainless basically for the price of materials. Labour is cheap so sit in the shade with your cooler and get the locals to do it.

A few years ago Puerto La Cruz, VZ was very reasonable, but things may have changed.

If you are looking to haul-out before sailing to South America then the closest place is Puerto Rico, probably on the east coast. Also there are D-I-Y yards in St Thomas and St Croix and probably Tortola.

A couple of years ago I refitted at Island Water World at St Maarten. Cheaper than the opposition and it was very handy having the chandlery on site. The ablution block wasn't very salubrious, but it was only for a day or two.

I've hauled out in the BVI and Antigua. Both are acceptable. St. Maarten is great for a haulout if you need to stock up on supplies, both IWW (as mentioned above) and Budget Marine have great selection and prices. There are numerous specialty businesses ranging from engine rebuilds to steel work (I had a great custom-made mount manufactured for my wind generator there). As you go further south the availability of parts goes down as does the cost of labour. Trinidad is popular and quite crowded in the summer due to the insurance-mandated exodus from the hurricane belt.

not MAY have changed, but HAVE changed, not a real good choice anymore these days ...
you may want to consider Curacao ..
Curacao Marine, great yard, they have a Budget Marine and you can work on your boat yourself ...
beside that, we're hurricane safe ...
out of the hurricane belt ...

Curacao Marine - Ship Yard on Curacao Netherlands Antilles

might see you around here one day ...

Thanks for the replies thus far. I reallly appreciate it. I like the sounds of Cartegena, possibly Curacao. Trinidad, I believe used to be a good place. I hear it's pricey now with generally bad attitudes. ("Cheechako" didn't seem to expand on that much). I'd like to haul during the summer months while waiting out the hurricane season. What about the availbility of supplies in Curacao and Caregena? Unfortunately, my bottom has VC-tar, of which I'd probably need a little for a touch up and of course a paint to go over it.

Thanks again,

Mark

there is Budget Marine, Fedex, UPS and DHL ...
and if you want to know something specific, you can always email to the boatyard or Budget ...

Hi Nick ... delivering a Fontaine Pajot to Aruba and back to C'cao was enough for now (bad 22 hrs trip back, leaking escape hatches, boat making water, etc ... don't know if you read about it) ...
bay hopping along our Southcoast last week on Zeevonk - Joke&Henk was better ...
no idea yet about Panama ...
but who knows ... hard to find a nice guy I guess hahahahahah ...

say "HI" to Jose ...
groetjes,
Anya

Couldn't disagree more - Trinidad was excellent this time last year, good prices on gear especially through marine warehouse, and some of the friendliest people we have met.

Plus the food is the best in the Carib!

You could do worse than try Tyrrel Bay Yacht Haul in Carriacou. Nice little yard. Cheap enough, and you can do your own work. IWW and Budget will send 'stuff' up on the twice weekly ferry, as will many of the other businesses in Grenada, and there's a decent sail loft, fabrication shop and diesel engineer in Tyrrel Bay too.

The slip is 19 feet wide and it's a 50 ton travel hoist.

If you are not in too much of a hurry it's a pleasant place to stopover.

- - I would agree with Tyrrel Bay being a really good place to do a D-I-Y haulout. But be prepared by bringing in yourself what supplies you will need including paper clothes, brushes, rollers, paint, etc. etc. That way you avoid possible significant delays waiting for stuff to be shipped up from Grenada. TBYH is great in that it is "out of the way" and the only thing you have to do is your work, the distractions of a major harbor and city like Trinidad do not exist so you stick to working instead of playing.
- - But be warned, if you are a ketch rigged sailboat their travel lift has a maximum "reach" of 18 feet. This is the maximum distance the travelift can reach past your forestay (when bow into the travelift) or from mizzen mast forwards (if stern into the travelift) to get that sling under your keel. As a sloop there is no problem whatsoever. I could not haul there as I need at least 23 feet between travelift slings to lift my sailboat. Bummer.
- - Even in Trinidad, only 2 out of the 5 boatyards had a travelift with enough "reach" to haul my boat.
