Be nice with the locals and respect their culture...

So buying their fish and giving food was disrespectful of their culture ?? And what culture are we referring to, here ??

Not sure if this was tongue in cheek or not but let's add at least another two dozen Australian cities to the safe group as well as hundreds of safe remote anchorages.

From your statement, I have to come to the conclusion that people require moral education. Which brings to mind a few questions;

Who's morality should be taught
Why we feel that moral education is important or required...

Numerous stories of piracy in Haitian waters, even locals putting out fake lights to lure sailors aground, then rob and loot the wreck.

Stay far away from Haiti
I'm not sure the populous wasn't better off under Papa Doc? At least is iron fist maintained some sort of order.

Odd you would mention Arkhangelsk -- have you sailed there? But yes. I have cruised Russian waters -- perfectly safe. I never locked the hatches. This kind of barbarism is NOT the norm around the world, and should not be accepted as such.

Any city with a coastline in Canada can think of. In fact I docked for years, down town Toronto, biggest city in the country. I didn't even have a lock for my hatch.

Looks like Haiti has an average IQ score of 67.

No wonder they can get their stuff together.

Re: Haiti attack on Cruisers.

Many have forgotten history lessons: nothing changed, it has always been pirate infested around Haiti and much of the Caribbean and it have always been fishermen and farmers who, given the opportunity, take to piracy. Captains like Morgan were flooded with thousands of them when they called for crew members for new pillages.

These poor people were tied to the railing and beaten up severely. In the past they would all be put to the rack and get pieces cut off or burned off until they gave up all they knew. Pirates are the worst, except now may be IS is trying to trump that with all the mass beheadings.

Have no mercy for pirates, feel no pity for them. If they would get one dollar for ripping your heart out, they would do it without a second thought.

We (some members here on CF) have often advised to fabricate steel bars for the companionway entrance and have a lethal defense at hand in case they start kicking in those bars. If not deterred, give them hell, don't let them in alive.
Many have replied that they would not make this nor think of a strategy as they would simply skip those areas. Recent cases show that sometimes you just end up somewhere without having planned that.

If you want to sail the seas, make strategies for fire aboard, medical emergency aboard, pirates aboard, abandon ship etc. as these are part of the venture and you are your own fire brigade, security officer, medic etc.

In case y'all think I'm dreaming it up: I'm just reading this book that is FREE on Amazon Kindle, called Pirates of Panama. Read it to know how it was and still is.

Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/Pirates-Buccan...ates+of+panama

Re: Haiti attack on Cruisers.

I'm happy with this thread, and glad there are so many people that know the deal about this part of the world. There was another thread along these lines recently where I thought some of the posters fell off the turnip truck, LAST NIGHT.

I have guards outside my home 24/7 armed with AK-47's and grenades....they're there for a reason, and it's money well spent.
