Re: Haiti attack on Cruisers.

I've seen the ruger sar on some websites. Its a modified ruger 77 (an excellent rifle, and very popular in the USA among hunters) but being a bolt action it might be a bit slow as a close quarters defensive weapon. There are carbine and bullpup versions of the ar15, ak47, and sks that might work better.

Re: Haiti attack on Cruisers.

My Ruger 77 in 7 mm Mauser is a piece of crap. Sliding the bolt forward usually doesn't pick up the cartridge, and accuracy is lousy. Lucky to get four-inch groups with scope on benchrest at a hundred yards despite countless bullet/powder combinations.

Indeed, but I have to make do with what I can legally own, here.
Hunting auto restricted at 5 rounds best I can buy with my hunting licence.(5+1 max)
Despite local competition, (Steyr, Tikka/Sako, Haenel.. etc) Ruger have earn themselves a very good name.

Surely this has to be a stock bedding problem, scope mounting issue or a seriously burnt out barrel but why doesn't it chamber properly???????

The sum was supposed to compensate French planters for their losses of slaves and property during Haiti’s 1791-1804 revolution, which gave birth to the world’s first slavery-free, and hence truly free, republic.

It is the only case in world history where the victor of a major war paid the loser reparations.

It took Haiti 122 years, until 1947, to pay off both the original ransom to France, and the tens of millions more in interest payments borrowed from French & American banks to meet the deadlines.
Yes the origins are probably there but the actual situation is due to a set of circumstances and one of them is the big natural disaster with devastating consequences in lost lives and destruction of infrastructures and housing.

Another one is overpopulation and the lack of control over it, a common problem on the region (Republica Dominicana, El Salvador, Puerto Rico).

On Haiti they had in 2013 374 Hab/km2, a number similar to highly industrialized European countries like Belgium and much bigger than all the others with exception of Nederlands.

Worst then that is that while on Belgium the population from 2010 to 2013 increased 8Hab/km2 (5Hab/km2 in Netherlands) the one on Haiti increased 15Hab/km2.

Thats all I have.

As Cuba opens up many more cruisers will sail past, or visit Haiti.
You started a history, philosophical and gun debate. Maybe a couple of more.

What was the OP? I hope the couple are doing well and it may be info. for others whether or not to hit Haiti.

The posts on history may be interesting. The ones on my 7MM aren't. I have a house full of guns so what! I'd go to a gun thread for that.

Re: Haiti attack on Cruisers.

The earthquake in Nepal today made me think about the situation in Haiti. Haiti is the poorest nation in the world outside of Africa. Nepal is number 2. I've spent quite a bit of time in Nepal as sailing is my second hobby, mountaineering my first.

Nepal definitely does not have the money, bureaucracy or infrastructure to deal with a major natural disaster. The people there live in thin air, cold, extreme poverty and hunger.

If bandits in the hills bushwhacked a couple in the wild country of Nepal (which there is plenty of) excuses would not be made about poverty and hardship. They would be seen by the local people and the international community as low down dirty no good criminals, fit for nothing but hunger and disease in prison.

Excuses shouldn't be made for bad people. They are just bad people. If you don't believe me, visit Nepal, it's a dangerous place no doubt, but robbery, violence and murder are not supported by Nepali society.

Here in the USA gun laws vary from state to state, so with 50 states you can imagine the confusion. Some states, like Massachusetts and New York, are downright anti-gun. There are also federal gun laws although they tend to be general, not as specific as state laws.

In the state I live in, Florida, laws are generally relaxed. For instance, private sales of guns between individuals are not regulated at all. I think buyers are required to show the seller that they are Florida residents, drivers license will do. Not sure if the seller has to do the same. But whether this happens in any specific sale is unknown.

Dutch/Australian couple attacked. Australian embassy involved. Australian embassy lacks the teeth to do anything, likely because it's a tiny embassy on the other side of the planet. So who does the Australian Embassy contact in order to get meaningful diplomatic support. Not the US embassy. No no no. The Canadian Embassy.

I think that says everything that needs to be said about the kind of aid Haiti gets from the US.

My Jamaican born wife said that it would be normal for a citizen of a Commonwealth nation (Australia) to seek assistance from another Commonwealth nation's (Canada) embassy. I don't think it says anything about US's aid.

Just for your information, since you seem to have your head up your ass, I am a gun owner, NRA member, and serious skeet shooter.

This is not real life, no casual discussions like you and I can have with our marina or mooring neighbours.
Starting on a subject and drifting to another.
Should you sail one day "across the pond", get in touch with any E.U skeet shooting club, they will help for red tape, bring your gun and expect a warm welcome.
An exclusive way to socialise with the locals outside the boating community.
