Re: Gibraltar - Canaries - Cape Verde Islands in Summer

The Portuguese islands (and maybe Portugal) allow/offer a 90 extension with some requirements (proof of medical ins and some financial resources). Porto Santo about 20 miles from Madeira has one of the cheapest marinas at 134 Euro per month. The info was current as of fall 2017, as I stayed 2 months for 268 euro with free water, elect, and laundry.

Nice place to be.. and an easy run S to the Canaries if thats where you want to head.. or go to Funchal for a couple of days to supply for the crossing and head S and W from there.

Re: Gibraltar - Canaries - Cape Verde Islands in Summer

I checked the information about Porto Santo on the Cruising Association app, it seems there are only a very few pontoons and usually people stay in that marina at anchor or on a mooring ball in the harbour basin. Did you stay at a pontoon? Would you consider it a safe place to leave the boat for lets say 1 month?

Re: Gibraltar - Canaries - Cape Verde Islands in Summer

When I arrived in Early Oct 2017 i went onto a pontoon. After a week I left for 3 weeks and I was required to be on a mooring as I didn.t have someone that could tend my lines in case of surge. When I got back I was able to leave the mooring and rejoin on a pontoon where I stayed another month and finally left late Nov 2017. It was very windy when I was there and a surge at times. Depending on the size of your boat (most on wharf or pontoons were 46ft or less.)and time of year I think you could leave your boat for a month. The alternative is Madeira itself or a 2 day sail to Canaries. --
