I thought from the title that the thread was going to be a ringing endorsement of the Galapagos! Oh well. I haven't been there Goagoa (yet), but I understand that agents are no longer required, although one must apply in advance for a cruising permit. The current regs and rates should be readily available from the Government of Argentina.

Not Argentina I'm afraid. Try Ecuador.

the cruising permits are issued by the Director General de Intereses Maritimos (DIGMER)

Theres no requirement for anything. Just sail in.
We were also given all the stupid misinformation and I was seriously wondering wether we would just get tossed out on arrival.

Of course its just like a normal port of call. We went to St Christobal and stayed a week but had a 30 day 5 port permit granted on arrival for about US$120 all up.

Fuel was US$1 per gallon! But we had to buy it ourselves, not letting the agent buy it as it would cost double. They try and tell you its illegal for anyone to sell deisel except agent LOLOLOL. We hopped in a taxi and dragged the gerrys to the gas station.

Galapagos is unmissable!!!!!

Book tours only when you get there. Full day tours snorkeling with sealions etc are US$45

See below a photo of our friend

This was in June this year
