Fort Lauderdale to Chesapeake

I'm planning on heading north around mid May, have about 18 days to get there. I'm on a sailboat that motors comfortably at 6 knots and besides the boredom of motoring, I plan to sail most of the way outside the intercoastal but might go inside occasionally if weather is bad. Any recommendations where to stop on route for time out and advice generally on this passage?

Good stops that are relatively easy in and out would be F. Pierce, Fernandina Beach/St.Mary's river, Savannah or Charleston, then into Beaufort. Go inside from Beaufort to Norfolk
