pirate Fishing in Caribbean/San Blas??

Hey guys, we are very new to sailing and even newer to fishing but will be cruising the San Blas and north of Colombia for the next two weeks and REALLLY want to catch some fish while we do!

It's a very vague question but does anyone have any advice for us in this? I know it's not safe to eat all reef fish but our equipment is very basic so am not sure if we would be able to fish in the open sea... Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!!!

It may not be sporting but drop a waterproof flashlight over the side on a short line at night. Size your lure for the size fish you want. Or, catch the first small fish that bites and use it for bait. The down side to this kind of fishing is it it's late in the day and you have already eaten. Or if in the morning, toss an old coconut in the water to get their attention then cast your bait.

Kuna law prohibits foreigners from taking anything from the sea in the San Blas...although many don't honor this law and the Kuna lack enforcement reources.

However, in route to San Blas from the W, you pass Escribanos Banks...good fishing there. Caught a nice King Mack there earlier this year.

Thanks for the advice, will give it a try. What kind of depth is best for fishing? And what length of line/size of hooks would work for an ok size fishy?

Also how is fishing between Cartagena and there, will be in open sea for at least 1 day. Any good to fish there?
