First Cruise to Virgin Islands

We are planning to sail our 48' Formosa to the VI (and Puerto rico) from florida this winter. We have a 7' draft. Anyone have any suggestions for a reasonably priced marina or mooring ball that could accommodate us? Also, we are considering leaving the boat unattended in that area for the summer of 2013. Any suggestions for "safe" moorings as far as crime and hurricane...also reasonably priced. Thanks!

Re: First Cruise to Virgin Islands

The nicest marina in the BVI is Nanny Cay and they accommodate quite large boats. They also have a haul out/storage yard. Most moorings in the BVI can accomodate 7 ft draft. I don't have any info on the US VI or PR but judging from the stories I've heard about theft in PR from other cruisers I wouldn't leave my boat there over the winter. I also would not leave my boat unattended on a mooring during hurricane season as I'm pretty sure the insurance company won't cover it.

Re: First Cruise to Virgin Islands

There aren't too many places to leave the boat permanently on a mooring in the BVI, Penn's landing comes to mind and perhaps also Fat Hog's bay. I keep my boat on the hard at Nanny and can recommend them.
The prices for storage on the hard are pretty high at Nanny Cay, but I gather that the prices on Virgin Gorda at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour have gone down for storage.
