Always sorry to hear about anyone getting hurt, let alone killed, while boating. Seems to me that more people get killed on dinks than they do on boats.

It's a large concrete piling that the cruise ship ties to. The proper term is a dolphin.

So is it safe to assume alcohol related accident or are they hard to see?

Given he was the owner of Dingy Bar and Grill, plausible, plus limited visibility at night, must have been a sizable dingy with 5 people on-board on plane.
