EXTREME CAUTION PETER ISLAND

PETER ISLAND-GREAT HARBOUR

DIVE ON THE MOORING AFTER YOU SECURE TO IT IN GREAT HARBOUR AND CHECK THE CONDITON BELOW THE WATER.

2 WEEKS AGO AT 4AM OUR MOORING IN GREAT HARBOUR PARTED AND WE WOUND UP IN THE ROCKS.

WE WERE SECURE TO THE MOORING, BUT THE MOORING WAS NOT SECURE TO THE SEABED.

THE LINE WE RECOVERED BELOW THE WATER WAS IN BAD SHAPE AND PARTED LEAVING US ADRIFT.

THE INSURANCE SURVEYOR DIVED SOME OF THE OTHER MOORINGS AND SAID SOME OF THEM WERE IN DEPLORABLE CONDITION

Re: EXTREME CAUTION PETER ISLAND

If you secure to any mooring in the Caribbean and do not check it you can expect to end up on the rocks. From personal experience we have seen:-
A mooring in Bequia which was secured by a breeze block, a mooring break away in Prickly Bay Grenada, fortunately the crew was aboard and awake and many other instances of poorly maintained and decrepit lines. By preference and where space allows we will always anchor on our own gear. Even in the charter boat hell of the BVI there are still places where it is safe to anchor.

Did anyone come around to collect the mooring fee that evening?

Re: EXTREME CAUTION PETER ISLAND

These were probably Peter Island moorings, and not Sea-Secure ones; although I've personally got on 2 empty boats that broke their moorings and brought them back in the BVI, once in The Bight on Norman where the mooring broke away as yours did and once in the North Sound where a cleat line hadn't been properly secured.

In the BVI especially one needs to check moorings, usually only the pendant and the first couple of feet of main mooring since most of the damage is caused by charter boats running over lines. Sea Secure does an adequate job these days of diving on their moorings.
I believe that last season the Moorings stated that someone should always be aboard when on a mooring after they (almost) lost a boat that drifted off at the Baths; I'm not sure if they still have that requirement.

Those moorings in great harbor were fairly deep I remember... Nice to be sorta proficient at freediving to give them a good look. We too, much prefer to drop the hook but that's a difficult bay to anchor in. Glad you were repairable !

Re: EXTREME CAUTION PETER ISLAND

hmm. it does suck that the mooring failed and there was damage to your boat. sincere condolences there.

I'm not trying to diminish the impact of this on you at all - I'm sur eit sucked and messed up an otherwise lovely time... but... I'm not sure anything that happens in the BVI warrants all caps and 'extreme caution' warnings!!

Hope it all worked out ok in the end for you-

Bad moorings and boats on the rocks would probably qualify.
That being said, every mooring should be carefully inspected before use.
I never trust those things, seen too many junk moorings and heard too many horror stories.

Re: EXTREME CAUTION PETER ISLAND

I guess an anchor drag alarm is warranted on moorings, possibly connected to a strobe to warn even off boat.

Re: EXTREME CAUTION PETER ISLAND

Yeah we always set the anchor alarm on moorings. Problem is any broken mooring is likely to drag fast and often they're 50m from the rocks and shore. Still it's better than nothing

Re: EXTREME CAUTION PETER ISLAND

If I remember correctly, you do not have much time in Peter Island before you would be on the rocks should your mooring line break.

Re: EXTREME CAUTION PETER ISLAND

The Mooring was not owned be Sea Secure

A different company owns the moorings there and claims
they had a diver inspect them in November and they were in good shape.

Amazing how quickly they deteriorated or the diver forgot to check or or or!!!

They collected the nightly mooring fee in the afternoon.
