Looks like we won't make it to Cape Verde now as there is no fuel and there is no wind. We are on a tight time schedule so can't wait it out. Does anyone know if we can go into Conakry, Guinea? Is it safe to go into just to get fuel or maybe Monrovia, Liberia. Those are our only two options. We only need to get fuel so won't be going on land for any other reason. Any information is GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,

Jody

dont have any info on conakry apart from what i said before, though if you need fuel ive called up a cargo ship before, and when asked if i needed assistance i mentioned that we were getting low on fuel.

their response was "dont worry captain i will instruct my chief engineer " and duly did a big circle, slowed down as they came past us an lowered down 100 liters of diesel in 3/4 filled old cooking oil containers!!!!

we still send the captain a xmas card every year, worth a try if nothing else!!!!!!

will look up ship agents in guinea and monrovia and get back to you
cheers alex

main port, sheltered inner port after big ship wharfs on nw side of peninsula looks like plenty of along side space also inside secure port area, should be no problem to go in there.
give them a call, should be no problem to go in there

should have light southerlies till monday then coming round to the west in the bight/bulge of africa area.f1-2, north of freetown ne lies getting stronger further north.
also checked local political situation in conakry, the new president is getting invested on the 21st dec he is the democratically elected guy so possibly could be tense out side of the port area.
would suggest keep listening to bbc africa world service as you get closer.

other wise freetown is a definet dont go they will rob you blind and monrovia same, both with very poor anchorages and little infastructure.

conakry security wise is the safest option as it is at the end of a peninsula inside a guarded area,so if there is a coup you will hear the shooting a long time before it gets to the port.
make sure to have enough fuel in your tanks just in case you have to make a hurried departure.
what is your current position more or less?
god blees and good luck

Hi Alex,

We are approx 100 miles SSW of Monrovia 4 degrees 40 N by 11 degrees 16 West. Do you happen to know the HF frequencies for BBC Africa?

Thanks,

Jody

If you can filter the fuel before it goes in the tank..... quality is reported not good in many places

also may be a good idea to go stern too to the dock, laying to your anchor as sat photo of the dock looks pretty rough.

also on departure suggest leaving at sunset so as to minimise the chances of getting robbed/boarded by local fishermen, who will have noted your arrival.........
seen these guys up to 60 miles offshore in big pirogues off the senagal coast though never had a problem but liberia a lot poorer.......
best alex
