Do you think she stands a chance?

Callisto, my beloved baby for 23 years is on the hard in St Martin. This was not planned for the storm, she just needed a bottom job so we hauled her two weeks ago. She is really well blocked, all the canvass is stripped. Do you think she has any chance with 150 mph winds... sniff, sniff.

Re: Do you think she stands a chance?

Time out boatyard? do you set straps to ground screws? not a good time frame to have the mast up and to plan a bottom job, not in SXM in sept...

Re: Do you think she stands a chance?

windfinder has the eye track passing just to the north of barbuda and anguilla, she will probably fare better than boats in the lagoon, that is if hitting the shallower water doesn't pull the track south, and keep her heading due west, then watch out antigua and SXM

Re: Do you think she stands a chance?

Remove all canvas to reduce windage as much as possible.
I would also think about removing furling jib and the booms.

Deflate dingy and store inside.
Strap down as best you can.

Good luck.

Nice looking boat. BTW

Re: Do you think she stands a chance?

1) Take off all the Sails
2)Lower the boom to deck and lash or remove
3) Remove all you can from deck level

NOW the biggest ISSUE ! Like you have we in the Philippines also used to use wooden chocks (no more! as they often collapse, in Typhoons) not just from the load but they move from the vibration as the yachts start to dance) I have watched this my self when we lost three yachts due to the first one going over due to the wood chocks moving, then collapsing - we had 100
-150 MPH AND the eye wall to contend with-direct hit)

1) If no steel available then use heavy planks to tie the upstanding beams to the other side (Port and Starboard) , I note the are braced length wise on each side -they should be bolted not just nailed , to do this due to the shape of the hull you need to take the cross planks down to a bottom beam on the ground that connects both up rights port and starboard,

If you can stop her dancing around you may have a much better chance, so try to find tie down points and run lines from the cleats to heavy weights- we dug holes and filled with concrete with large eyes, we also took the halyards down to these points as well (all tension-ed with the winches).

If you cant tie the halyards down to the ground then try to get them away from the mast as 6 or so slapping halyards add to a lot of vibration!!

Trouble is the yacht next to you needs to do the same?

Good Luck Steve

Is it possible to pack sandbags or dirt on either side of the keel? Sort of a catch it if it falls type of berm.

I feel for you, man. Nothing you can do about it now, though, less than 24 hours from the eye. Just try to be patient and hope for the best. Who knows, maybe it's her lucky day. Best, Pete

Also check what is laying around to minimize stuff that can get airborne. Thing loke plywood sheets can do a lot of damage.

Re: Do you think she stands a chance?

Good luck to you, and all the rest of us facing Irma. I'm in Fort Lauderdale, and depending upon where Irma goes next, we may be facing her fury too. My boat is in the water, in a relatively well protected spot, but I'm still taking every reasonable measure to secure her. That, and I made sure this morning that my insurance is up to date.

Re: Do you think she stands a chance?

I wish you luck. Cant imagine any boat propped on wooden blocks without serious ground anchors will still be standing after taking a direct hit from a Cat 5.

Re: Do you think she stands a chance?

I was in TOBY a couple of years ago. Whilst the past is not guarantee of the future, it was certainly the safest yard in the area during Gonzalo. The wind was 85mph.......But 150mph? Will be watching and wish u every success
