I remember saying on this board we were scanned several times going through NYC by the bridges by undercover boats. Well... here is some of the proof.

So NYC decided that the Coast Guard was incapable of doing their job, and has now duplicated their efforts at great public expense...sounds like the Italians are in charge.

Yes, NYC has never been known to run as "ethically" as New England. I think the biggest offender is the MTA. But anyway, I thought it was an interesting article to highlight the amount of scanning and observation you get going through there. It's pretty crazy, especially passing by bridges.

I'm wondering how long until they require AIS to transit NY Harbor...

Could be wrong, but I think I earned the right to be hard on NYC having lived there for several years and lived through 9/11, seeing it with my own 2 eyes, rather than on TV.

I am two minded on this. The movement of a large nuclear or "dirty" weapon by sea into a soft target port, is a very real issue, so I am pleased to see that the USGC and NYPD are on top of it.

On the other hand, if it were me, I might keep it secret where, and that, the technology to detect is actualy deployed. Unless, of course...

Ok, I'll have to confess. The the topic of the news story is indeed a good idea. Getting scanned for radioactive materials while transiting NYC is a good thing. It was interesting because we had it happen (and it was obvious) a few months back.

I guess I was trying to point out another issue, and the article didn't quite do it.

Now, what is getting annoying is seeing what I saw this weekend. There were 50 bazillion "Marine Patrol" boats out everywhere from every town. They seemed to launch as many as they could afford.

This was *not* in NYC, but in New England.

Now, these patrol boats should be protecting the waters maybe, right?

Nope.

They were stopping some guy, going to his 30 foot boat in a dinghy with his son on the 4th of July weekend. They hassled this guy and kept him at their marine patrol boat for a good hour or so.

It just seems to me this guy is getting a little treasured time off work to go sailing with his 10 year old son. The marine patrol, instead of protecting anyone, is simply out issuing citations for whatever they can. I see this time and time again living on the water. It's a shame.

Yes and no. The NYPD harbor units know and respect the USCG, however, eveyrone including the USCG would admit that the USCG is financially incapable of doing their job in many places and many ways.
Especially with Governor's Island abandoned, the USCG presence in NYC is now down to two stations, and neither one has the assets necessary to patrol the waterways in any major harbor. NYC has responded by doing the local job with local resources, supposedly including 10 ribs (2 on the water now) equipped for radiological monitoring. NYC has about a dozen police helicopters, the USCG has zero (ZERO) located here, they service NYC out of Boston.
Should this be a USCG job? Perhaps not, their jurisdiction stops at the waterline wile NYPD continues ashore. But since Congress won't fund the USCG to do the job...someone has to do it. The problem is, there are no donut shops on the water!
