I guess, there is a reason why it is highly adviced to fully avoid Venezuela.

Cruiser murdered in Venezuela

2 days ago a Dutch cruiser was murdered during a robbery in the popular island of Margarita, Venezuela.

Details sketchy and come from a local newspaper translated from Spanish.

Dutch cruiser Robert Sterenburg 59 years old and his wife aboard the boat "Mary Eliza" were at Marina el Concorde de Isla Margarita for 3 weeks after a passage from St Vincent.

Robert was shot dead during an armed robbery on board his boat.

If you have further details it would be good to have them.

I have been recommending strongly that people do NOT GO to Venezuela since my visit there two years ago.
All I can do is reiterate my warning.

The country is lawless. The good people are great and friendly but the Government preaches hate against the USA and western countries and the rat-bag and criminal elements have taken that hate to be a Green Light to lawlessness.

I pity their good people!

The article attached uses the word "concubina" which instead of wife means something very much worse.

As I stated on Boatman's thread of same, "very sad indeed".

Scratch another one off list. First Somalia and now Venezuela.

That's terrible. I always thought good things of Venezuela.

Re: Cruiser murdered in Venezuela

It is not 'now Venezuela' - that country was a hell of a place already back in 2003 when we sailed by. And we sailed by because one night before our visit a cruiser was shot just offshore from Margarita.

Same old. I do not know where people get their over-romanticized ideas of such countries.

re: Cruiser murdered in Venezuela - MERGED THREADS

Rob was a really nice guy who was excited about his plans to travel to the Straits of Magellan, Patagonia etc. This is a dreadful tragedy. All those who know him would be greatly affected by this terrible news. We believe his girlfriend Bridgette was injured as well and can only hope that she will be able to leave the country and travel home. Our thoughts are with Bridgette and Rob's family at this terrible time.

It is not really clear, but another article possibly indicates they had been at anchor for three weeks when this occurred:
