Crossing Atlantic on charter boat

In November 2016 I'm going to rent a sailing boat to cross Atlantic as one-way charter. Itinerary: Canaries - Caribbean (final destination will be specified later acoordingly to the base of charter company).I'm looking where I can find the boat to rent. Do you know the yacht charter companies who provide one-way charter for long distance or move their fleet to Caribbean for winter season?

.... not possible to find I would say (unless you are willing to pay top $$$$).

Charter companies normally do not transfer 'their fleet' between the Med and the Caribbean.

Some (charter) boats will be moved with cabins sold for top $$$ so your offer must be better than the revenue they would get compared to sell 'single bunks'.

... typically Canaries to the Caribbean is sold at around EUR 4000,- p.p. So a 'charter company' will do EUR 20k if they sell 5 bunks minus expenses for the skipper.

Why do you want to charter 'your own boat'? Going with a group of friends?

Not sure any company is willing you rent a boat for an Atlantic crossing, but if they do prepare to pay a LOT of money ...

Having said that: knowing the sort of boat, number of people and (max) budget would help - that way we'd know if any boat we'd find is one you'd consider.

If you have the experience and paperwork, you could maybe consider and look for a delivery?

I've only heard of one person who chartered a boat (actually a yacht) to sail across the Atlantic and that was Bill Buckley Jr. in 1980. This is documented in his book "Atlantic High". I forget what he paid for the charter but only remember it was an astounding amount (at least to me it was).

I have a vague recollection that Buckley chartered that boat from an individual, not a company.

If a charter is not available perhaps signing on a s crew might put you in a similar situation... Seems like if you want it bad enough you should be able to make something happen.

If you do find someone or company, make sure there are no insurance issues for such an unusual request.
Having said that, why pay to charter. I would have thought you would have more chance of finding someone that would pay you to do "deliver" a yacht for them, or at least be grateful if you did it for free for them.

May be you could take the boat of individuals not companies. If it was 2017 you could take/rent my own boat. Rental would be zero :-)

I have not heard of any charter companies allowing Atlantic crossings, but you might try doing a passage with someone like Andy Schell. check his website at

Natali, isn't that about the time of the ARC?

I can imagine the reticence of a company allowin an ocean crossing. Huge liabilities involved. You can also imagine the insurance nightmares involved. Who is covering who's ass?

If it can be done let us know because I have never heard of it other than Buckley. If u are loaded u might be able to talk a private yacht owner into it. Best of luck and welcome to CF
