Chinchorro reef

Going South from Isla de Mujeres, Chinchorro Reef looks like a convenient and interesting stopping point. Any comments or info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

We spent time in Xcalak on the Chinchorro reef. Beautiful remote area. We did not sail there, just drove from Cancun. We stayed for a week and it was very nice. I couldn't tell you much from a cruising point of view, but we did see sailboats heading south outside of the reef and there were one of two that were moored over night at the public dock in Xcalak.

Chinchorro reef is one of the offshore atolls. Not near Xcalak, but anyway, plan your stay according to weather. The holding is not all that great and boats have dragged anchor and been damaged in a heavy blow. You will have to pay to stop there since Belize has declared it a national park and the fees can be steep. The diving is spectacular and there is NO facilities there. Many found it better to take one of the dive boats out rather than take their own.

FWIW: I have unconfirmed coordinates for the South-West entrance to Banco Chinchorro listed at 18 deg 29.694 N x 087 deg 26.100W.
