Chesapeake Bay - Winter Cruising ?

I am interested in options for cruising on the Chesapeake Bay during the winter months.

Unfortunately, I do not yet have my own boat.

My wife and I have both been certified for basic keelboating - ASA 101.

We are members of the Capital sailboat club, but the club shuts down for the winter and we would like to find some opportunities to keep sailing through the winter. The club does not start up until May.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best Regards,
DJ

Winter sailing on Chesapeake Bay

If you don't mind a little driving, I sail out of Deltaville,Va, and I sail all year long. There are also clubs in Annapolis and area that sponsor Frostbite racing. Check out Spinsheet magazine.

Thanks AllAboutMe.

Deltaville is a bit far. Over three hours from us.

Thank you for the information on Spinsheet magazine.

We are already members of the Capital Sailing Club but they are shutdown during the winter months and do not restart sailing until May.

Are you aware of any bareboat charter boats in Annapolis or near Deale that we might be able to charter during the winter?

Thanks in advance.

There are several charter companies up your way, but I'm not sure how seasonal they are. I'd Google Annapolis Sailboat Charters and make some phone calls. There is also the issue of your limited sailing resume'. I'm not sure how much sailing time you need to qualify for bareboat charter. There are several sailing schools though that feature overnight courses to qualify you for bareboat. Again, Google and Spinsheet classifieds..SpinSheet is a Chesapeake Bay sailing magazine based in Annapolis devoted to sailors and other boaters who enjoy the lifestyle on and along the water.

Building the resume is the goal.

Thanks.

In the Annapolis area boats with inboard diesel engines and pressure water systems need to be winterized, so I doubt you'll find a charter boat. Your best bet is going to be the Frostbite racing scene if you are just looking for experience.

I'd be interested in doing some winter sailing - either on my boat or someone else's. I sail on the Severn (Severna Park, MD) when the weather's nice.

DJ, All of the charter companies here in the Bay winterize the boats until spring and most haul them out of the water. So hitching a ride with someone that keeps heat aboard and uses their boat over the winter is your best bet. Or take some time and head south and pick up a charter. Chuck

We have the New Years Day race down here on the fat end of the Bay from the Seaford Yacht Club. We run all year-long though most of the racing is over after this race but we do have one boat that goes out every Wednesday night almost in any weather all year-long even if it is a shorter trip at the worst.

Once you get south of Deltaville, VA the issue of ice is less but it can be quite cold and the water right now is a cool 44 degrees F. We don't haul most boats this far south but the activity is to say the least less than normal. The swimming is quite poor. The wind across the water when it gets this cold is bone chilling on even a sunny day.

We start racing seriously again in April through Thanksgiving.

We also have numerous indoor activities where sailors test eating and drinking skills.

Matt,
Could you clarify the question "What do I need?"

We've done the run from Philadelphia to Annapolis several times. The first thing you need is a favorable tide in the Delaware River and favorable winds if you need to sail. You can overnight at the Engineers Basin in the C&D Canal or run straight through, it is an easy shot. It can take as much as three hours to get up the river to Baltimore so add that to the 12 to 14 hours for the rest of the trip at 5 knots. You need tide tables, chrts and the ability to follow a range.
