My wife and I are considering moving from Connecticut to Reedville, Virginia on the Chesapeake Bay. We would be moving our Endeavour 37 sailboat there and either buy a home with a dock with at least 5 ft. mlw depth (if we can afford that) or buying a home inland and renting a slip yearound at a marina. Can anyone familiar with that area give us some pointers or general suggestions?

That's a nice area. I spent a lot of time on the Northern Neck, it's rivers and the Bay when I was a kid, and eventually decided to retire there.

We built a home in 1994 on Tabbs Creek, east of White Stone in Lancaster County, about 15 miles south of Reedville, and retired there in 2001. We almost bought a lot on the Bay at Crane's Creek, just on the other side of the Great Wicomico from Reedville. We ultimately decided to buy where we did in part to be closer to good grocery stores, the hospital, doctors and dentists, restaurants, and other conveniences. Friends who live in Westmoreland County or western Lancaster County do a lot of driving on an almost daily basis. You might want to think about that. Not that the Reedville area is a total backwater, just that the Kilmarnock area has better services available--my personal opinon.

We kept our boat on our own dock, so I don't have any direct experience with keeping a boat in marinas. If you end up in the Kilmarnock/Irvington area, think about joining the Rappahannock River Yacht Club. They have a dock on Carter's Creek where members can rent slips. There's also a commercial marina right next door. You can find out a lot about marinas in the area on ActiveCaptain.com and waterwayguide.com. There are some CF members from that area, as well. I'm sure they'll chime in with more specific advice.

Wherever you decide to settle, you'll definitely pay a premium for a waterfront lot, and even more for one with a pier with sailboat depth water. Finding a good realtor will be really helpful.

I live on the Great Wicomico 6 miles up river from Reedville. I keep the boat at our own home dock, so not much experience "keeping" a boat at a marina, but know some of these marinas well (and may have a few pointers on homes). PM me if you wish.

HI BozSail,

My wife and I have a house we hope to sell this year in Burgess, just up the road from Reedville. It is on the water just very shallow, not enough for a sailboat or much more than a john boat. It is a nice quiet area and a beautiful view out the back of the house, with a swimming pool and is set 1000 feet off the highway. I am trying to finish some inside work updating the look of the house. It has a nice large unfinished basement with vehicle access in the rear of the house.

We bought our sailboat in Reedville. It's a very small town, and there is a fish processing plant that you can smell from miles away if the wind is blowing the right way. We took sailing classes in Deltaville, and it was a really nice, cute little town. Not really much for walking the town, though. Right now our boat is in Kilmarnock which is right between Deltaville and Reedville, and by far my favorite out of the three. There's only one marina, and they can't haul out sail boats with a big draft, but the staff is great! And it's not a long bike ride into town.

I truly love that area. It is pretty tightly knit and the people are amazing!

Have you checked out the eastern shore of va, across the bay and lots of water and 2 great marina in cape charles on lower shore ?

No experience with marinas but lots of good creeks to keep a boat. Look at Warehouse Creek. Very secluded, deep and a number of houses for sale.

For winter we use Jennings Boatyard, very friendly and let you do your own work

Greater Wycomico Cruising Club very active and friendly bunch
