Caribbean

Hi all,
Can anyone recommend a good book as a guide to cruising the Caribbean?
Thanks!

The Doyle guides seem to be on most boats we run across. We use them, and they are good in terms of navigational information, as well as providing interesting local detail.

Definitely the Doyle guides. The sketch charts and sailing instructions are good enough that you don't need paper charts other than maybe a planning chart.

Don't worry about buying the new ones either.

I have a bunch of them about 10 years old and I thought I would give my self a little present of a new BVI's one for my trip here....... only the photos of the advertisers have changed.........

The Nancy and Simon Scott guides are also good ones.

Don't throw your old ones out until you double check them. Scott's 2001 Cruising Guide to the Virgin Islands includes the Spanish Virgin Islands. Later issues only have the American and British Virgin Islands. Of course, you can buy a used one on Amazon.com for about one dollar. : )

Doyles guides are, IMHO, the most useful not only for the basic information and sketch charts - but for the on-shore services and things like boat-boys, etc. And - you can get right up-to-date revisions at their website: Chris Doyle Guides Homepage
- - Although the older versions have little or no changes to sketch charts and such, the changes to on-shore services and supplies is one of the big pluses of the Doyle Guides.
- - I am currently about two islands behind Chris as he sails north gathering more up to date revisions to put in the next edition. Things have changed quite a bit with the world financial collapse in the last couple of years and many shore-side businesses and access procedures have changed or ceased to exist.
