Can you anchor in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Is it possible to anchor in the bay in San Juan (not in a marina)?

Google earth shows a few boats anchored on the very far east end of the harbor by the club nautico.

I wouldn't do it though. There are good reasons why everyone who lives in San Juan keeps their boat in Fajardo.

Yep. I find Google Earth to be the best, first, quick-look source for this sort of information. Here's what you can see...

I anchored right where the arrow is many years ago, but in those days it was not a pleasant place to stay for long. The San Juan Bay Marina facilities there were a bit scary (0 security and dirty) and it was right next to a bad part of town, not to forget the poor holding and deep water and limited room! In other words, not a place I would want to stay for long. But, this was 20 years ago, so things have probably changed a lot. OTOH, San Juan is a fun city to visit.

10 years ago for us ! never again ! Deep nasty way to much crap on the bottom, Even gave me a bad feeling ! Marina almost as bad ! we left never left the boat alone ! Came back by air LOL to see the things they have there !! Nice place to vist, but not to anchor !! just my 2 cents ! Hope it's changed, as we would go back in our boat if it has !!

I spent a week in the marina in 2002. I had no problems. I was a single man with two male crew. We enjoyed the easy access to the Buses, spent some time at the mall and saw a movie. The internet cafe was close by. It did seem kind of crowded for an anchorage. I looked around the harbour for another place and saw none as protected from the weather.

I do remember a climb up from the boat to the dock at low tide.

Good luck.
