BVI's to Grenada and return

The planting of 5-year plan for a year-long sabbatical is FINALLY becoming a reality!! There are still a few years until departure ($$ and boat maintenance first), but it's happening. Any input from people experienced would be greatly appreciated with regards to the route. The initial plan is Halifax-Bermuda-Tortola. It's the next part I'm pondering; is it better to go offshore to Grenada and meander back, or island-hop down and back? Again, any input is greatly appreciated

With temerity, I will comment on your plans, having never sailed beyond the BVI's, but having sailed extensively there. I would certainly read Donald Street's works as he has cruised extensively in these waters. Bear in mind that it is pretty much an into the wind sail from the BVI's to Antigua almost any time of year, wind is a little more northeasterly in the winter. Once the corner is turned, it gets easier. A direct course from the BVI's to Grenada should be OK in the winter, while the wind tends to swing more southeasterly as the year wears on. Hope that this is of some help! Don't forget the hurricane season (June throught November / heaviest August & September)!

[Reality Check]

Unless you like to go to wind, after a Long sail.... the best bet is to make the hop to St. Martin then work your way down hitting the islands in mostly short day sails all the way down. Lots to see and do almost any time of year.
