Bimini over July 4th

I'm organizing a guys trip from July 3rd to the 8th. We want to get some good fishing in while also finding a few nice coves to anchor in later in the week before heading back to Lauderdale.

What anchorages would you all recommend that might be less crowded than others, if there is such a thing during the week of the 4th.

Current list has east side of gun cay in E/NE, either side of South Cat Cay depending on weather, are their any others further south?

Would also be interested in any good dive sites/wrecks you more experienced Bimini travelers might recommend.

Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks sorta what I figured with Bimini's close proximity to Miami... We'll be coming out of Hillsboro Inlet so I may change plans to head over to West End instead.

All of the anchorages near Bimini are fair weather at most. Bimini harbor has a swift current and a hard bottom. The anchorages near Gun & Cat Cays are out in the open. Plus, 4th of July will be very crowded.

Re: Bimini over July 4th

@ Chuck, I'm headed back in a little more than a month so I'll use the permit more than once.

Any options in the West End area that I could cover in the same time frame? I know I could spend a couple of nights in OBB but would rather try to find a nice anchorage.

Anyone been up Lucayan Waterway? Anything North of West End with any protection? Maybe we'll get a couple days of nice weather...

There are plenty of canals you can anchor in around Lucaya, Ocean Reef, Xanadu area. Excellent diving on the reefs just offshore.

This is just wrong. There are two excellent anchorages in North Bimini, on the south side and north side of Bimini Bay Resort. There is also a great anchorage for east or north winds at Kitten Cove on North Cat Cay, as well as a great west wind anchorage on South Cat Cay called Dollar Harbor. I do wish that people would talk from experience and not from rumor. I have anchored in all of these in 20k+ winds, very comfortably.

Anchorage near Bimini Gun Cay

Is East of Gun Cay at South end good anchorage? Anyone know where Kitty Cove is located or other anchorage around Gun Cay. Also, where is Dollar Harbor? Thanks Steve

Re: Bimini over July 4th

Steve, Dollar Harbor is at the southern tip of South Cat Cay. It is accessible from the west side only but the anchorage itself is on the east side of the southern tip. where you can anchor will depend on wind direction and strength so given the right conditions you can anchor anywhere you have depth and good holding. The winds are typically prevailing easterlies making anchoring on the east side only good in light conditions, West winds are rare and anything out of the north or south with any strength will make the entire area very uncomfortable.
