Best Time to Charter in BVI?

Had someone ask me the other day when is the best time of year to charter in the BVIs. I've only been there in late September and late October. So, anyone been there at a variety of times of year and want to venture an opinion on the "best" time (good sailing, not too crowded, comfortable weather)?

Thanks.

March and early April but it will be crowded.

Re: Best Time to Charter in BVI?

I usually sail there early June and enjoy it. Fewer people, well past the christmas winds, fairly low hurricane risk, though it's a bit hotter on land than in winter.

Re: Best Time to Charter in BVI?

we were there last year in very late May and the first few days of June. It was really nice and as mentioned not very crowded. We did slightly suffer from an amazing lack of wind all week. At one point it was gusting to almost 2 knots.

It can be slightly sticky at night if there is no wind. Temperature wise the best time is probably end of April. Either way its just a great place to be.

Enjoy!

Was in BVI's in March 2011 and was appalled at how crowded it had become since our first visit there in 1995. I now steer clear of BVI's unless guests insist on going there.

My recommedation is to go when it is less crowded (late spring or early fall).

Re: Best Time to Charter in BVI?

Was there last week on business. Hot as h-ll. Completely out of season. Vast majority of places closed. Liked the loads of anchorages I saw but was wondering about what it must be like in season with all that HUGE number of laid up boats out and about. When is the "shoulder" season?

Re: Best Time to Charter in BVI?

I've had good luck in what could be called "shoulder season." I've chartered three times in November and four times in May since 2006.

I've only encountered early Christmas Winds once, and that was the latest I've ever gone in November - after Thanksgiving.

I've only had lack of wind for more than two days and that was in late May.

The substantial discounts offered for off-peak months have allowed my wife and I to charter twice as often as if we would have been able to sail during prime months. (Air fare is cheaper, too). Anchorages are not as crowded as I've been told that they become during high season, although locals now think that the slack times are becoming more crowded. They see a trend towards a longer busy season with dead time coming only during Hurricane season.

I hope this helps.

We have sailed in the BVIs a lot, during all of the seasons, we really enjoyed our trip last year during the first two weeks of August. The restaurants were still open and there was practically no one there, we had most of the anchorages to ourselves.

Re: Best Time to Charter in BVI?

The "BEST TIME" could mean different things to different people.
If your idea of the best is the lowest rates on a charter boat, August and September.
If your best is having the whole place to yourself, the entire month of September is as dead as you can get. I am in Tortola now and doubt I could find enough people to put a poker game together.
If you want mayhem and wild parties you need to be here for BVI Spring Regatta in April.
The best wind is in December/January, but there are 50 credit card captains on chater boats in every single bay you could possibly anchor in so you might as well stay in the marina there are fewer people there.
They say there are now in excess of 3,000 charter boats in BVI, and that was before Marine Max moved in last year with a whole new fleet and more to come. In addition everybody and there brother is buying a 45' cat and setting up there own charter business as a retirement scheme.
I think the best time to come to the BVI was about 30 years ago.

May/June or October/November. Decent weather, no crowds.

Re: Best Time to Charter in BVI?

We chartered there late Nov-early Dec last year. Good winds, not too crowded, always found a mooring. Better charter rates too.

Re: Best Time to Charter in BVI?

Our favorite time has been December before the holiday rates go up. The winds are usually great and the crowds not bad.

Re: Best Time to Charter in BVI?

We've been January, February, May, July, October and November.

January and February are cool compared to the rest of the times we've been. I'd go during those times again if that's the timing that worked for us, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

I'd probably say October/November are my favorites.

The other things to consider are costs of the charter and whether or not you'll have a A/C.

I would suggest trip insurance. It is hurricane season. Come on down. The odds are that you won't have a weather problem.
