Re: Best Islands for Distinctive Rums

Try these: Gosling's Black Seal in Bermuda, Callwood's, British Virgin Islands, Ratu's, Fiji, Takamaka, Seychelles, Old Monk, Cohin, India (I know, it's not an island) "pirate rum" (unlabeled, "moonshine" rum) Vava'u, Tonga, and Clarke's Court, Grenada. Cheers

Re: Best Islands for Distinctive Rums

kclancy,

All of the above!

Decades ago I attended the Seatrade trade show in Miami Beach. My business partner and I were showing a power efficient slot machine.

Most, if not all, of the Caribbean islands had booths there. They handed out miniature bottles of their local rums. We gathered twenty or thirty and conducted a taste test after dinner. When we ran out we staggered across the street to a small shop and bought a bottle of Eclipse as we agreed it was best.

There was one though, in a three-cornered bottle, that was excellent. Anyone know the name?

Like the OP, my favorites are Eclipse, Pussers (tradtional), and Meyers Dark as floater on Rum Runners.

Re: Best Islands for Distinctive Rums

To me agricultural rums made with sugar cane are better than industrial rums made from sugar making residue.

Either Guadeloupe ou Martinique offer many wonderful agricultural rums aged in casks made from the same oak (limousin) that is used for cognac.

Barbancourt is also an agricultural rum. And there is one in Grenada, Clarke's Court.

Go for the good stuff. But even their 7 year old is pretty good too. Anything below that is OK but nothing special.
