Best Departure Point from the Canary Islands

Hi, am hoping for some views on the best departure point from the Canary Islands for an Atlantic crossing.

I have bought a boat in France and will have it delivered to the Canaries where the crew will change for the Atlantic crossing in late November.

Does anyone have a view on the best departure point
- best Marina facilities
- good chandlery
- easiest and cheapest to provision
- cheapest to get to by plane
- most frequent flights in and out

I'm guessing Las Palmas given this is the start of the ARC but just seeing if someone else has the same/different view.

Thanks

You'd be guessing right. Las Palmas. No where else for provisioning or Chandleries ... Mind you, their chandleries are not very good....

marina is good or you can anchor straight outside the marina and use their docks

The marina will be closed for all but ARC boats....you better arrive 2 days after the ARC started!

Personally.. I'd get to Las Palmas after the ARC has left.. provision up and sort any last minute jobs.. then I'd head SW-ish to the Cap Verdes and spend a week or so there.. fixing if needed and chilling a bit.. restock on fresh foods then head the 2100 miles to the Caribbean.. not the fashionable 'Jimmy Cornell' route.. but its a lot more comfortable.
Funny thing is there's not much difference in distances overall.. just a pleasant break on the way.

What? Miss all the parties? You gotta be kidding. The anchorage is free and open and about 300 meters from the dinghy dock in the marina. Its one of the best two weeks in the cruising world.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a good alternative to Las Palmas. Good shelter, marina, All the facilities of a small city, and a branch of El Cortes Ingles, probably the finest department store I've ever visited.

Re: Best Departure Point from the Canary Islands

I believe that Las Palmas, Gran Canaria is the best, as other have said. It has a good anchorage area next to the marina for non-ARC boats, until they leave. The services at Las Palmas, including chandleries, restaurants and provisioning are excellent! We flew out from Las Palmas and left our boat safely in the marina for a short visit home. I would not leave the boat at anchor while away though. The marina is much safer.

Re: Best Departure Point from the Canary Islands

We will be departing from La Palma rather than Las Palmas because we will be participating in Jimmy Cornell's new Atlantic Oddyssey rather than the ARC. Cannot see where it could really make much of a difference which departure point for an ocean crossing since all the Canaries are situated so closely together. We have never participated in a group crossing. Since this very likely will be our last ocean crossing thought we would give the group thing a try just for the experience. Extremely reasonably priced and includes a week in marina prior to departure and a week in marina upon arrival in Martinique. There is another Atlantic Odyssey crossing in November but we are waiting for early January in hopes for better winds.
