I found Pavlidis to be OK for the water
stuff but not up-to-date about the land side. I don't want to say they are bad, more like they are mediocre. The editions we had (most recent, can't remember the pub dates) should have shown significant changes on land that were old enough that they should be in the book.
I certainly can understand the problem of cruising guides
. It is very, very hard for the author(s) to visit all the places before a new edition is done.
Also you can look at Active Captain
. There were a number of entries two years ago and more were being added (I know I put some in).
