Beaufort to St Mary's Inlet
We will be moving our Brewer from Beaufort NC to St Mary's Inlet the first week of November. Instead of short hops, we're considering making it a straight off-shore run. We usually average around 6 knots while offshore, but plan for a 5 knot aver.
I will greatly appreciate comments and/or advise from anyone who has made this run. Thanks Roger Last edited by rleslie; 06-09-2006 at 19:18. |

North or South Carolina?
The inlet is pretty straight forward. Both jetties are well marked, but awash at high tide. Watch the tides as they are usually about 6 feet and make quite a difference in the current. The inlet to Saint Marys is deep water all of the way in. My experience sailing south is that the prevailing winds are from the South and East. Fronts bring the wind shifts, but can mix the seas up pretty well.

Even if it's NC, if weather is good, this is not a bad passage. On a passage like this, I sometimes motor sail if I am having trouble maintaining my average speed on sails alone. You are wise to figure 5 instead of 6.
Plan your arrival near mid day, that way if your a little fast or slow, you are still running the inlet in good light. Exposure's advice is golden since he lives at St. Marry's inlet and transits it often. George
