Bahamas Dog Question

Hi all - Heading to the Bahamas with our Jack Russell terrier in June. We have our paperwork in order and will visit the vet the day before we leave Ft. Pierce. Plan on sailing offshore to Lake Worth Inlet and then crossing with an next day stop at Great Sale Cay before heading to clear customs in Spanish Cay. The dog certificate is valid for only 48 hours once signed by our vet. Will customs enforce that rule? That's not possible in our 30' sailboat. I could likely do it by stopping in West End to clear, but wanted to avoid that in lieu of Memory Rock to Spanish. Thanks!

You didn't mention the Bahamas import permit?

Re: Bahamas Dog Question

Yes, we do have the Bahamas Import Permit -- that's the one that requires the Vet signature within 48 hours of clearing customs.

Re: Bahamas Dog Question

Why risk getting turned around for not checking in at the nearest port of entry and also over extend the time limit on your dog, when it's so easy to check in at the nearest port of entry (West End) and avoid both potential problems?

Re: Bahamas Dog Question

I've sailed to the Bahamas 3 times, twice with my own Jack Russell, each time sailing from Lake Worth to the Abacos (and beyond). Customs has always been very laid back with regard to everything. I doubt you will have any issues at all. It may be wise, however, to clear customs in West End as opposed to waiting until you get to Spanish Cay, which would be two days after entering Bahamian waters. You can clear customs at West End, then depart and still make it to Mangrove Cay in the same day, and possibly even Great Sale. From either Cay, you can make it to Spanish the next day, or even better, Manjack Cay or Green Turtle. The only reason I could see for stopping at Spanish Cay would be to clear customs or take diesel.
